Obituary of Evelyn Johnston
Mrs. Evelyn Johnston, age 87, was the daughter of Sims Wimberly and Annie Sanders. She was the loving wife of the late Dr. Glen Anthony Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was the matriarch of her family that includes loving daughters Sharon Banks and Rachel Bryant, beloved grandmother of Erica and Eliot Banks, Mia McDonald (husband Mychal McDonald) and Abdul Taalibdeen; great grandmother of Jordan Banks, Melanie McDonald, and Mychal McDonald, and aunt of Stephen, Gregory, and Angela Moore. Her sister Gwendolyn Moore and brother-in-law Eugene Moore preceded her in death.
As a young girl, Mrs. Johnston moved to Detroit, Michigan from Miami, Florida. She graduated from Western High School and received her Undergraduate Degree from Wayne State University College of Education and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Michigan.
Her career was vast, first as a nurse at Receiving Hospital, an educator with the Detroit Public Schools Community District for nearly thirty years, a certified financial planner and adjunct professor at Wayne County Community College District before finally retiring from an illustrious career of service.
A world traveler, community leader, and city of Detroit champion, Mrs. Johnston leaves lasting memories with a host of friends, colleagues, and neighbors who loved and respected her for her wisdom and the caring advice and counsel she often shared. Mrs. Johnston lived a spirited and purposeful life. She will be forever loved, remembered, and treasured for the great woman she was. Leading by example, she was a true original!
