Obituary of Ralph William Parvel

Ralph William Parvel, age 85, of Grosse Pointe said H-E-L-L-O to heaven on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. Ralph was born on January 13th, 1935 to incredibly proud parents William and Helen Parvelski of Detroit. He was the youngest of three children and predeceased by his sisters Lilian and Delores. Ralph was a graduate of the University of Detroit High School in 1952 and received his Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Detroit, in 1957 where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army reserves throughout his college years. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of fifty seven years Sandra (Strehler); three children, Amy Potter (Michael), Sarah Stevenson (Dean) and Andrew Parvel (Kate); eight grandchildren, Claire Stevenson, Hannah Stevenson, Victoria Potter, Jack Potter, Henry Parvel, George Parvel, James Parvel and preceded in death by Lucy Parvel. Ralph spent his entire thirty-seven year career as an elementary educator with the Roseville Community Schools retiring in 1995 with the affectionate title of "Gym-Man". He was a lifelong collector of old and unique items he found as a celebrated veteran of the Grosse Pointe garage and estate sale scene. Ralph was also a master chef, applying his secrets to his favorite cooking method of grilling, no matter the month or weather. As a lifelong sports fan, he enjoyed the achievements of the Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons and wallowed in the despair of the Lions. His favorite pastime was making people happy. With a quick wit, permanent smile and friendly outpouring of song and story, he worked hard to brighten the days of his family, friends and "his people" at his favorite establishments around town. Never short of some of the worst jokes ever written, he brought groans to thousands. His beautiful life will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all those who knew him. A private family ceremony and a celebration of Ralph's life will be announced at a later date.
