Obituary of Charles Edward Rivard
Charles Edward Rivard (Lt. Col. USA Ret.), 71, was born December 25, 1940, in Mt. Clemens to Dr. Charles L. Rivard, MD, and Thelma E. (Sudhoff). He passed away April 3, 2012, Easter Week, at the home of his niece, Katherine Nebel in Harrison Twp. He grew up in St. Clair Shores, graduated from Austin Collegiate Prep (1959) and the University of Notre Dame (1963). Mr Rivard served in the DM2 with the First Cavalry in Korea (1962-63). He spent many years in the U S Army as a controller. He earned the rank of Lt. Col. He met his wife, Bobbie, through their commanding officer. They were married Christmas Eve, 1982, at home on Rivard Blvd., Grosse Pointe. He practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in manufacturing companies and self employment in KY and MI. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie and his brother James L. Rivard. He is survived by sister, Elizabeth L. Nebel; brothers Robert J. (Barbara), Thomas A. (Kimberly) and David J. (Julie); sister-in-law Joann (James); 4 step children; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Charles served as post commander for Ludlow Vets in KY. He was a member of Grosse Pointe War Memorial Vets. His lifetime love of history and geneology lead to a study of Detroit land grants and street names. He was presented certificates for Detroit 300 Tri-centennial Original Settlers (Jacques Campeau and Catherine Yax) and Michigan Pioneer Family (Nicholas Rivard, Detroit). Rivard Blvd. and Charles St. in Grosse Pointe and Rivard Plaza in Detroit, were sites of Rivard homesteads and ribbon farms. On Saturday, April 28, 2012, a Memorial Mass will take place at 12 noon (gathering starting at 11:30am) at St. Paul Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms followed by Military Honors. Inurnment will be at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN, with those of his wife.
