We are distant Scottish cousins and our mother, also Margaret, was put in touch with Margaret Kelly in the 1970s by another relative who thought they might like to be penpals. Over the years my mother sent the Scottish magazine ‘the People’s Friend’ and Mrs Kelly sent back postage stamps (which my mother collected) and books about the Cat Detective – as well as friendly, cheery, newsy letters and photos of the family. My sister and I began corresponding with Mrs Kelly too and in the 1980s when my brother married an American girl and we all went to Minnesota for the wedding, Mr & Mrs Kelly drove all the way thereso that we could all meet up in person, which was lovely. Over the years our family has exchanged many postcards and Christmas cards as well as letters, and even latterly a few emails – Mrs Kelly did not shirk from trying out the new technology!! Her friendliness and warmth came through in those letters and emails, we are sad to hear about her passing, and will miss her long friendship by letter.

A special aunt. Loved her laugh. Enjoyed her newsy emails but not half as much as I enjoyed the letters, notes and various clippings. Remember the Scout treat Gorp Aunt Margaret could -- and did -- the little things that meant the most and were important.

Even with a Marilyn of her own, she took in another Marilyn. Never in the 42 years we knew each other was I ever forgotten and I could always look forward to a little something from the local paper that she knew would bring a smile to my face. The best mom a daughter from another mother could ever have.

Best mom a kid could have....She had my back when I got in a fight, okay my only fight....She couldn't believe it when I told her I loved her more than the accidentally broken chess set from Mexico. She liked haggas- but didn't make us eat it..She taught me how to can tomatoes and apple sauce- and now my children are spoiled and will not settle for anything less. She gave the best hugs...and back-rubstreatments..She is the glue that made us a family and keeps us a family. She was always happy to give and shy to receive.Best mom a grown up could have.Love yaMore later...marilyn
