I dearly loved Bernie and I shall always cherish so many memories of him. How impressed I was when I first saw the life sized photo of him posted on his open Sunrise door, under which he had written All are welcome, but the puck stops here. One morning at breakfast while drinking a large mug of coffee, I was so impressed when he remarked that he liked his coffee strong as passion, black as sin and hot as hell. He once gave me an Easter card creatively signed ' Love from your Easter Bernie. Another time he amusingly referred to the basement Sunrise residents as cellar dwellers. As a child he said he loved to read and write and the librarian allowed him to read books in the adult section. All who loved and knew him have lost a very special person. Marilyn Matz

Grandpa Bernie never missed acknowledging our children's (his great-grandchildren) birhdays, even after he was no longer able to partake in our small celebrations (it was just too hard for him to be present), a card would always arrive, well in advance, so they knew he was thinking of them. I know they will remember him for his thoughtful, caring ways with them. They are also proud of his hockey accomplishments--...the oldest hockey player ever! A long life filled with all its joys, struggles, disappointments, successes; may he now rest in peace.God bless.

Dad was a man of few words. He rarely used a long tale when a few words would do. He summed up my hockey strategy with the phrase, Knock him on his ass. He can't score laying down. He summarized my going to a Catholic university by saying, If I can't knock some sense into you, maybe the Jesuits can. He was gruff at times, but always kind. He drove miles out of his way on a vacation so he could turn right on Telegraph, which started all our trips. He loved a good joke and laughed at himself as well as at us. I will miss him

Dad was always there for us, whether it was accompanying Art from Michigan to California with a U-haul, being a pall-bearer at my dad's funeral, or helping us build something or repair something around the house. One of my favorite memories was when he took Mom to the ice show. Was she surprised when they got to their seats and found all of us there waiting for them. Dad had bought tickets for all of us.

Bernie was a great person, I worked at Western Electric with him and always liked him. One on the things I remember is that he painted the handels of his tools pink because he figured no one would steal and use pink tools.

Where do I start with all the wonderful memories of my Dad The great pancake breakfasts' at the park, the many camping vacations, the hockey games and the ice rinks he made so we could skate all day. The many hours of work and love he spent in the basement making our Christmas gifts. The way he loved my Mom and the sacrifices he made for all of us. A hard working man who loved his family and gave his all. How blessed we were. I'll love and miss him always. Your loving daughter, Barb

I'll remember many things about Bernie. His great tool bins and hardware supply. He could fix or build anything at all.His love for hockey and the games we watched together over the last few years were fun times. His support and love for Barb and myself was deeply appreciated. He was a character for sure but he was his own man with a heart for family above all. He was always in our prayers especially during the last months. Bernie will be missed and remembered always. Tim

I have so many memories of Gramps. He taught me to build, fix and create things with my hands and to never be afraid. He taught me to play hockey and how to appreciate the game. I remember cherishing family dinners with my aunts, uncles and cousins. I remember Point Pelee. I remember the good times, the bad times and everything in between. I remember Gramps for the man he was and the man he always strived to be.

My Dad. What a great and fine man he was. He taught me so much. Who I am has a lot to do with learning from Dad. He was my hero. I loved him so much and appreciated him. Didn't always agree with him but always held him high and always respected him. He loved hockey so much. He handed that love of hockey down to his kids and grandkids and nieces and nephews. I will miss him and will always cherish his memory.

I have such wonderful memories of Uncle Bernie...what a great smile! He was always smiling from ear to ear...smiling even bigger as he told us kids one of his great hockey stories. He was an amazing man! I was always in awe of his train set at Christmas time...a beautiful winter wonderland in miniature form. Every time I see a train set today, none of which compare, I think of Bernie. And oh how I loved swimming in his BIG backyard swimming pool in the summer, what a treat! I remember chatting with him at my Mom's 80th birthday party...he was proud to show me his plaque from the Guinness Book...I was proud he was my Uncle and bragged to all my friends. As he got up to leave the party, he wiggled his knees into place, got his balance, and headed toward the door. After receiving one of his big bear hugs, he waved goodbye, got in his truck, and squealed outta there like he was burning rubber-) You gotta love Uncle Bernie!!! His light shined so brightly. He touched many lives with his love and laughter. May the many beautiful memories bring a quiet joy to your saddened hearts. Love & Prayers to all.

I have nothing but happy memories of Uncle Bernie at family gatherings and, of course going to the hockey games where he coached my cousins, Art and George. I remember a robust man climbing our huge elm tree to delimb it when it suffered dutch elm disease. Always smiling and always with his HUGE handlebar mustache. May you rest in love and peace, dear uncle. Debora

Bernie, I have great memories of the time we shared together in the hockey world and also in fishing up in Alaska. I always enjoyed you watching me play hockey growing up and through the junior ranks down in Michigan. You were alway a great guy to be around and I enjoyed writing letters back and forth from time to time. You will be missed by everyone up here in Alaska. Remember to keep your head up when you skate the puck, and always shoot the puck with a purpose up there Bernie! Sam Tikka and Tikka Family.
