Hearing this news brings me such sadness. I pray for her and her family. Mrs. Givens was my absolute favorite teacher at Ferndale High. Just now I see she was only 10 years older than I am but she was such an influence in my life. Thanks to her, I am where I am today a Montessori Preschool Teacher at Brookfield Academy in Troy just a few miles from where she taught. I last saw her when we met at Ridley's for lunch. To this day I thank her for all she taught me. I still use a great deal of what I learned during my senior Year, 72-73 andI felt privileged to be a student in her Vocational Child Care Class. This was a wonderful program that allowed juniors and seniors to learn about working in the field of early childhood education, we helped run a lab nursery in our school 2 days a week, went out on a job two days a week, and had one day of class to learn and prepare for the following week. It was a wonderful experience and it gave me the chance to see if I really wanted to work with young children. I guess I did since I am starting my 38th year as a Montessori Teacher. Thank you Mrs. Givens! You certainly touched my life and inspired me, especially at a time when there weren't many teaching jobs. You encouraged to stay with my dream and I thank you. Thanks to you, I have touched the lives of many children. Children who have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, parents, etc. Thank you again!

Pat was a devoted, beloved teacher and an admired colleague held in affection by us all. The AHS Christmas parties at Pat and Len's home were the happy sign that the holidays had really begun. She is gone too soon. We send our sincere condolences to Len, Lisa, and family.

Pat was a wonderful lady. Always thinking of others. Her generosity, good humour, and positive attitude to life truly make her one of the most special people I've ever known. Although I didn't see Pat very much in recent years, I thought of her often. She has touched the lives of so many and will be missed dearly. My condolences to her family.

Pat Givens was truly a positive influence in my life in 1971-1972 as she was my early childhood education vocational teacher at Ferndale High School; my mentor, personal sounding board, model and much more. I am grateful and honored to have known her and had her support during my senior year in high school. Her legacy to her students and to the early childhood profession lives on in her students, their students and their children. Thank you, Mrs. Givens, from the bottom of my heart. Love, Debbie Picard (Thomas)

I would be walking home from school many times if it wasn't for Pat. She was a great tennis player and teacher. My 32 year old daughter still remembers the sandbox in the Athens pre-school and the teacher that made it a wonderful place to be.

Mrs. Givens will be greatly missed. What a tremendous loss. I will always remember what a truly great teacher she was. I loved her classes so much that when I would skip other classes, I would go and hang out in the child care room. She has taught so many, so much. She will always have a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her loved ones and the ones who loved her. Heaven has received such a loving Angel. Spread your wings and soar high with the rest of our angels.

Mrs. Givens was so special! She was my preschool teacher at Athens when I was both 3 and 4 years old. I remember walking in the first day with a pacifier on a ribbon around my neck. She reassured my mom I wouldn't have it long. I was able to use a real hammer and real nails in the workshop and i remember her singing and teaching us the motions to the Itsy Bitsy Spider. My senior year at Athens, she was my teacher again. My first day of class she ran into her office and got this globby-clay container, she sqealed, Elizabeth, you made this for me 13 years ago! I was dumbfounded. She dumped out the paperclips and sure enough, showed me my initials. She made everyone of us feel special, important and loved.

I was honored to learn so much from Mrs, Givens. She inspired my love of all things relating to early childhood development. She encouraged me to obtain my college degree and I am still in the field of child care 25 years later. I am deeply saddened by this loss. I still sing the songs she taught everyday to the the little ones I care for and sang them to my own children. I have saved almost all of my materials and notes from my time learning with her but the most valuable lesson was her teaching of the PIES-physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of young children. I recently contacted the school district to try and get in touch with her but did not receive much of a respnse. I am so sad I did not have a chance to say goodbye or thank you. Robyn (Weiner) Rinke

Mrs. Givens was one of those people that I assumed would live forever. We first met when I was 3 years old on my first day of preschool. I remember hammering nails into oranges and her funny puppet songs! When I took her childcare class in high school I did not expect her to remember me after all these years but sure enough she did! She even had a newspaper clipping of me from 96' hanging on the wall in her office. Mrs. Givens made each and every one of her kids feel special and loved. She was the perfect combination of tough and caring! Thank you for the positive influence you had on my life. -Paige

Working with Pat at Athens preschool was a wonderful experience. She was a caring teacher and so aware of how preschoolers and high school students related and learned in different ways. She respected each student and worked with their strengths and weaknesses to help them develop and learn. My condolences to her family...a very special lady.

She was a wonderful teacher to my children as toddlers and high school students. I called upon her a lot for advice and she did not hesitate to take the time to talk to me. She will always and forever be in my memories. I would never know about her toddler program if she did not also have my sisters in her class in the late 80's.

I have learned so much about life from Mrs. Givens. I had her for two years in high school. I will never forget being the last student to walk out of her classroom, of the last class she taught before she retired. When I gave her a hug goodbye, I remember seeing a look of satisfaction on her face. I knew she was happy with the amount of people's lives she had changed, and the hard work she put into as a teacher and a mentor. I don't know one student of hers that didn't love her as a teacher or a person. The best memory I had with her was running into her at Ridley's when I was skipping school. She just gave me a smile and said you better be back for my class! I am so grateful for the positive effect she had on my life. She will always be remembered by us. Prayers to her family.
