Thursday nite would not be complete without Fred Trost. I enjoyed going to the Houghton Lake sportsman fair he helped put together every year. Freds only problem was he became too controversial at times especially with the Urine Buck Lure fiasco. He may have been correct in his accusations but he bit off more than he could chew so to speak, it cost him everything. In any case I liked him and he is sorely missed.

Fred and his show became part of my life that are now treasured memories. Like Fred Bear and Mort Neff, Mr. Trost showed us how to enjoy life via the great outdoors. Watching his show transported one away from all the strife of daily life. He was funny, engaging and truly committed to presenting us a way of life that has been minimized in our modern world. Fred is, was and will be missed for years to come.
God Bless you Mr. Trost

I just found the series of outdoor shows that Mr. Trost hosted. I moved away from Michigan in the late 60s. Hunted and fished SW Michigan and other areas too. Mr. Trost's show brought back good memories. I have to say the best part of all the shows was the attitude Mr. Trost had. He is the kind of person you look forward to hear from. His show was by far the finest outdoor show ever and not because of the great amount of fish and game produced each show, it was the best show because Mr. Trost is a regular guy, a man's man. A great example of a humble and genuine good soul. His family must miss him so much, I feel for them. I wish I could have met the man. Have a nice day.

I looked forward to hearing Fred say It's Thursday night, time for Michigan Outdoors and Get outdoors, it's a great place to be! I credit Fred and his shows in making me a better sportsman. What impressed me was that Fred was always interested in learning and, as he learned, I did too. I have a few episodes of the shows that he did with Bob McGuire, I wish that I had more; they were all good shows! Outdoor TV is not the same anymore. My belated condolences to the Trost family on their loss. Sam

Words cannot say how saddened were to hear of Fred's passing. We never missed an episode of Fred's shows and we enjoyed meeting him at the Practical Sportsman museum in Bath. He was kind enough to autograph a Practical Sportsman magazine for my wife which she still has to this day. He was one of the inspirations for our family moving from the suburbs to the country to really enjoy the out of doors! We won't forget Fred and our prayers are with your family.

I'm sorry for your loss, and wanted to let you know that Fred will be missed by many. I grew up watching him on t.v. every week, and have missed his shows over the last years. I learned alot about the way things should be, in the outdoors, and in life, from him, and I feel that I am a better person for it. I will never forget him, as long as there is a outdoors to live in. The entire Trost family, will be in my prayers, and my thoughts, and know that He is fishing in a greater place, and will save a spot for all of you. I had the opportunity to meet Fred at a banquet in March 2002 held in Lansing. I was the proud owner of a 24 large mouth bass that weighed over 7 lbs that I had caught on a lure that my husband insisted wouldn't catch fish! Guess I showed him. Just 3 days later I was on the program! I cannot tell you the number of people that would stop me in stores saying they had seen me on Practical Sportsman. Friends I hadn't seen in years and family members that I never realized were outdoorsmen called the night the show aired. Fred had a lot of fans and we all had a great time that evening. I was so saddened by his passing and wish you all my deepest sympathies. I'll catch the next big one for Fred. Sincerely, Althea Powell (AKA Lea Thompson - the name given to me on the show by Fred!)

Dear Sherry and Family, I was sharing with my Mom (Judy Pike) about the times when working at the AFL-CIO that Fred would call up and ask to speak with the beautiful blond in the other room. I always would tease him and say, which one, there are three. He would always ask me when I advised him to please hold, why I didn't phrase this as hoed on. Fred had such a great wit! He will be sorely missed. I was so saddened to hear about your loss. Donovan and I prayed every night for Fred's recovery. We now pray for your family in your time of need. Watching Fred made me feel closer to my home in the Upper Peninsula and made coping with city life just a little easier. I never had the pleasure of meeting Fred, but can tell from his actions on Television and through the media as well as from the comments made by folks who knew him since his passing, that he was a fine man and simply put, just a good guy. Rest in peace Fred. Maybe someday I'll have a chance to meet you in the greatest hunting ground around...heaven. Condolences to the family. Be proud of your dadhusbandgrandpa and celebrate his life. I first met him at an outdoorama I believe and several times after. Fred always had a good story to share usually ending with a good laugh. One afternoon in 1996 I took my aging father to the museum. It so happened Fred was there and my dad finally met him with a big hand shake and grin. My dad didn't say much. You see Dad was in the early stages of alzhelmers. Fred had him smiling and talking in no time.I am grateful for that memory. This was during the time the anti hunting people were here attemping to stop bear hunting. I told Fred of my close nightime encounter with a cougar in Yosemite Nat'l Park and getting it on video. He wanted it on his show to show the danger of large predators losing fear of man. He asked me to appear on Practical Sportsman with the story. That was a great experience and Fred made it fun as well. My dad has passed on but many fond memories remain of those times on Thursday eve. around the TV with Mr.Fred Trost and many wonderful experiences and things we learned about our great outdoors. Zach and family May God Bless you during this difficult time....You are in my prayers.

To the Trost Family, Fred Trost made a huge difference in the lives of many Michiganians and beyond. Every week he brought together families and friends around their TV's. To entertain us, teach us and inspire us. He inspired that next family hunt or fishing trip. We needed his cheerleading for Michigan and hunting in our state. He brought us together and he is missed. My sons were taught by his show to do what was right in huntingfishing but maybe not that popular with peers. Freds Trost shows helped make us more informed sportsmen in Michigan. He made hunting and fishing important on Michigan TV. He taught families to have fun together in the outdoors. He made us look at what was right. Fred Trost not only taught Michigan sportsmen to hunt and fish. He taught them to care. Thank You Fred Trost may you still inspire to hunt.

I was very saddened to hear of Fred's passing. Some of my fondest memories was watching Fred every weekend when I was a kid in the 80's. HIs shows were just do entertaining. Even after I hadn't fished in almost 15 years, I watched an episode of his newer show and just that one episode made me go out and go fishing again like I did when I was younger. My buddy brad and his dad Woody was actually on an episode of your show, but I sadly missed it and could never find it on rerun. Someone should think of letting the public have some of those videos either on a site, or maybe on YouTube. When people hear think of outdoor sports in Michigan, some think of Fred Bear, others think of Ted Nugent or Mort. I think of Fred Trost. Rest in Peace Fred. Wish you could have stayed around a few more years as our icon to the wilds of Michigan.

To the Trost Family Thank You for sharing Fred with us, the Michigan Sportsmen and women. As a very young man stationed in Northern Michigan, I came to know of Fred on the Michigan Outdoors Show. I caught my first view in the fall of 1982, and I never missed a Thursday Night. I even had them taped when I was not able to see them. Thursday night was a very special time in my house. I still have recipes that Fred, Cathy and Bob made and tasted on the show, these recipes are still cooked today at our hunting camp and in our home. I am truely Sorry for your loss and will miss Joe Sportsman as I miss Michigan Outdoors. These to me are a testiment of Fred Trost. Fred taught us to ENJOY and take part in this GREAT State of Michigan and to be conservationist, Good Stewards of the wilderness we call home. My Memeories are many and not a Thursday Night goes by that I do not remember Fred saying come on in its Time for Michigan Outdoors. Thank You again for sharing Fred with us.

I always looked forward to watching Fred Trost's outdoor shows. He always told it like it was and wasn't afraid to speak his mind. Yet he came across as a guy that was easy going and likeable. His great enthusiasm for the outdoors was matched only by his confidence in the spotlight of a camera or a gathering of his outdoor peers. I'm sure that his spirit is now revisiting all those great hunting places and fishing holes that he so enthusiastically showed us all on TV.

I recorded the 1987 fall hunting seasons of Michigan outdoors during Michigan's 150 birthday of becoming a state. It was the best shows, the best footage Fred produced during the prim of Michigan Outdoors. It is now recorded history from 21 years ago. remember Zack Trost, we all die, some young, some old, we do not know when death will come when we are born. so it does not matter how long we live, but how we lived. have a good life. let your heart feel the good life your dad had. he will always be here as long as the memories are locked in your head.

I'm very sorry on learning of Freds passing away last year. I really enjoyed both of his shows on CH 56 WTVSDetroit on Thursday evenings. I was a member of both clubs for a number of years until our cable provider switched to another PBS area. I learned a lot of hunting and fishing tips from his show and the recipe portion was great as well. So in closing I would like at this time to pass along heart felt condolences from my self and my family to the Trost family and may [Fred The Practical Sportsman]rest in peace in the Great Outdoor Sportsman place in Heaven

Rest In Peace Fred. Thanks for all the outdoors memories- like many thousands of other hunters, fishermen, target shooters and lovers of the great outdoors, you had our support from the time you picked up the gauntlet from Jerry Chippetta and the original Mr. Michigan Outdoors, Mort Neff. Sherry- Fred will be missed by every person even remotely interested in the outdoors because Fred brought it to our living rooms all those years on Thursday nights, a special night of the week, because Fred's show made it a must see event! I even remember when Fred had a full head of hair- that's how long I've been a fan. All sportsmen and women are saddened by Fred's passing, but his memory will live on forever in Michigan's Outdoors.

At Seaholm High School, Fred was a senior while I was a sophomore. We were both bass players in the orchestra. Fred's activities playing music outside of high school,(Amtones, playing with Mark Gridley) allowed me to fill his positions when, after high school he went to MSU. Due to this, the contacts I made led to a music career spanning 35+ years, as a part time musician, jobbing in the Detroit area... He was also with me and Mr. Gerard (Orchestra Teacher) on the day everyone in our generation recalls, the day John F. Kennedy was shot. I also went to MSU, and saw him a couple of times. After this, I followed him from afar watching Michigan Outdoors where he assisted Mort Neff, and later on Practical Sportsman on PBS. I confess I was not a regular watcher, but always saw Fred when flipping by (as well as Zach) I always thought sometime I would visit the Museum in Bath, and perhaps see Fred again... I tried to find it once, when taking my own son back to MSU, but did not stumble upon it driving through or near Bath. I now regret I did not make a more concerted effort. I knew many of the people Fred touched in High School... They will be saddened when they learn of our loss... My sincere condolences to all in the Trost family... Sincerely Michael McGaw

My dad and I watched the show on Thursday nights for many years - if he wasn't home from work to watch we'd talk about the episode over the phone. Michigan Outdoors was such a memorable part of my childhood growing up! I have spent many fine times in the woods with my dad every November. He has been taking me hunting since I was 12 years old or so. I learned a lot along the way. I met Fred a few years ago. I was so excited I had to call my dad right away. That was fun. But I found him to be energetic and passionate about every endeavor he undertook and his beliefs, respectful of others' beliefes, and to have a great sense of humor; When he first got to know you, he treated you like he had known you forever. It is with great sadness that I learn of Fred’s passing. Directly after my graduation from M.S.U., back in the stone age of 1984 when we used to ride our dinosaurs, the very first on-the-air program that I ever worked on was Michigan Outdoors at WKAR as a studio cameraman or floor-director (no doubt initially much to Fred’s chagrin and apprehension, but it worked out fine). It was my great privilege and pleasure to work with Fred, and I learned a lot, and had a great time during my brief stay there. And in later years, it was always a treat when he came down for pledge breaks and Big Buck Night at WTVS, Detroit when I was working there in the 1990's. From listening to many people throughout the years and my travels, I know that Fred will be truly missed by the sportsmen in this State, and all others who enjoyed his programs, and they number many, myself included. And to this day, there is a small part of me and a lot of other people that still thinks that when it’s Thursday Night – It’s time for Michigan Outdoors. Fred, ya done good!!! My deepest heartfelt sympathies to the entire Trost family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

We are sorry to hear about Fred. He was a highly respected and greatly admired man. I hope he and my dad (and those others who have passed on) have a great time in heaven talking about all the outdoors activities they did while they were here! It's impossible to know how many people watched Fred's show...us viewers felt like we knew him like family as we invited him into tell us what he found out or did that week! While my husband was overseas during the first Gulf War, I taped all the Michigan Outdoors shows and then sent the tapes to my husband to watchshare. Everyone (all the troops) loved the shows; and watched the shows over and over. It was an awesome way to bring home to our troops. Our troops were so grateful. While at the Tawas City Ice Festival one year, I saw this man walking on the frozenicy bay with a walker, and the walker had a bicycle horn on it. It was Fred! It was then that I met him,(with the walker, he couldn't out run me or get away from me very easily! HA!) and told him about sending the tapes of Michigan Outdoors overseas for our troops to enjoy. Fred seemed pleased. We are grateful to God for Fred. He made a difference in our lives. Who can forget that episode when he got bit by a helgamite or whatever those little bugs were called Thanks Fred, for the memories, thanks for knowledge, thanks for your passionzest, thanks for sharing your life with us. Also, thank you to Fred's family, for the sacrifices made for the TV show. Thank you to all of those who worked forwith Fred to bring us all a fun, family oriented outdoors program.
