I met Martha at an NCTA conference in Lake Ann Camp, near Traverse City, in 1999. We shared a bunkhouse. She was an inspiration to me. I looked for her at every conference and she was always there. I will miss her this year, and I am sure we will do something to remember her during the conference. My sympathy to all her family on the loss of a remarkable woman.

Martha was one of the most focused and energetic people I have known. I never saw her walk away from a challenge. She served the North Country Trail Association faithfully in the 1980s as a member of their Board of Directors. In 1990, when no one else would step up to the plate to serve as President, Martha did. She was the right person at the right time. The Association was poised to evolve from an all-volunteer organization and hire its first staff member with all of the process and responsibilities that entailed. Martha made it all happenwriting a position description, advertising and recruiting, interviewing, and then supervising that person at long distance. Martha handled it admirably and professionally. I have always admired Martha as the person who took it to the next level for Association. She was always friendly, cheerful, and upbeat. We are all the better for having known Martha and we have a sense of loss that she is no longer personally present.

Aunt Martha had a love of life and people that influenced everyone who knew her. She was an amazing friend to my wife, Gail, when Gail most needed it. She will be missed by all.

It took my breath away when I heard of her passing. Martha was my New England friend and fellow Red Sox Fan. I will miss her bright eyes and smile. I learned a lot about Martha at her service. I mostly learned how to live life. As with many, I would have loved one more chat.

Martha was my roommate at the first NCTA conference I ever attended in 1995. Her welcoming spirit was part of the reason I became involved with the trail organization. She was the kind of person we should all hope to be. I'll really miss her at the conferences.

Martha's North Country Trail family all send our prayers and thoughts to Martha's family. We know and remember Martha as a vital, enthusiastic (and speedy!) hiker who loved the trail and loved being with us, at least as much as we did with her.

Martha was a delight to all of us who hike the North Country Trail. She was such a welcome sight when she would pull a surprise visit to one of our hikes, meetings or conferences. Sleeping in her trusty car camper, she would show up at the most unexpected times to our great joy!

I met Martha at the NCTA Annual Conference a couple of years ago and at last year's in North Dakota we shared a bus seat on our way to a hike. We had a wonderful conversation and I was looking forward to seeing her again at this year's conference in Ashland, WI. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She will be greatly missed by her North Country Trail family, including me. Please know that she was loved by many. God Bless, Lorana NCTA Board of Directors, Secretary President North Country Trail Hikers Chapter in Marquette, MI

We were so sorry to lose Martha last week. She was such a vital lady with sparkling blue eyes that it is difficult to adjust to her being gone. Often she sat in front of us at first service at church. Sometimes we'd joke that we were both Marthas. How blessed she was to live so fully until her death! She will be missed!
