Obituary of James M. Colville
Dr. James M. Colville Age 82, died on Monday, July 17, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He is survived by Josephine, his wife of 56 years; three sons- James Jr., Mark (Amy), and Tom (Cathy); and six grand children- Marshall, Tyler, Kayley, Alana, Andrew, and Sara.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM EDT on Saturday, July 29, at Northbrook Presbyterian Church, corner 14 mile and Lahser in Beverly Hills.
Dr. James M. Colville was a graduate of Royal Oak High School, attended Michigan State University when he was called to serve in the US Army in 1944 during World War II. After an honorable discharge, he entered Cornell University Medical College, graduating with honors in 1948. In 1951, he served as a Captain in the US Air Force as a Medical Officer during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he returned to academia and received a post-doctoral Research Fellowship from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at University of Rochester in Microbiology, earning a Masters Degree in 1955.
From 1955-1962, he served as staff physician at Henry Ford Hospital- Division of Infectious Diseases.
In 1962 he received an appointment to the University Of Rochester School Of Medicine as Associate Professor of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Microbiology, head of Infectious Diseases. In 1964, he returned to his Michigan roots to become attending physician and Head of Infectious Diseases and Director of the Microbiology Laboratory at William Beaumont Hospital, where he remained on staff for 30 years.
Following his retirement from full-time duties in 1994, he remained associated with the William Beaumont Executive Health Service, working part time until early 2006. His life-long quest for knowledge and genuine interest in people, along with his warmth and generosity, touched the lives of many. His passion was medicine. His joys were his family, his church, his friends, traveling the world, bicycling and skiing, and stomping around in the Northern Michigan woods. He will be missed by all who knew him.
