Bill and I were in graduate school at Harvard together in the late 50's; he introduced me to the college I spent my life at, of which he was an alumnus, and he took it upon himself to show me around with great pride (I'm vain enough to think in both directions). As a result we stayed close friends throughout the years. It was a friendship I cherished, for Bill was always a person of great integrity and kindness, very intelligent and thoughtful but at the same time modest. In the last 15 years or so we lost touch with one another, and his death of which I only now learn comes as a great sadness to me. A fine human being whose presence was a blessing to us all.

Professor Stein not only taught philosophy, but also instilled in me a love of knowledge and learning. With the proper focus and analysis, almost any subject becomes interesting. He remains an inspiration to this day!

I just learned of Bill's death and wish to leave a remembrance. Bill was a neighbor and friend for over 20 years as well as a fellow Wayne State University colleague for longer than I can remember. I will miss our neighborly discussions when he was working in the yard or walking one of several dogs. He was always a joy to greet and exchange a few comments. Our occasional meals together and more common sharing of libations allowed our friendship to grow over the years. Most of all I will miss his joyful approach to life and how it always managed to brighten my day. He will be missed.

It was Stine’s class on Immanuel Kant that had an impact on me. It was impossible to read the whole of the Critique of Pure Reason in a semester, so Stine threw out cutting questions and remarks that drew us into trying to think about that “transcendental philosophy.†We tried to understand what the Critique was all about and I can clearly recall Professor Stine rubbing his beard while patiently listening to our talk.WIE SIND SYNTHETISCHE URTEILE A PRIORI MÖGLICHRest in peace in the tradition you carried forward.

I was a student in a couple of William's philosophy classes at Wayne State in the early 1970s. He was a thoughtful, kind and caring professor who enjoyed posing all the classic questions to his students. My sympathy is extended to you. Charles Murphy.
