Mary (Pavlock) Turner posted a condolence

I've thought of Mr. Binang often since my graduation in 1997, and frequently find myself telling stories about him. This evening, while telling my children stories about one of the kindest and most patient teachers I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, I googled his name in the hopes that I would find his smiling face attached to some great achievement or accomplishment. What a great sadness to find news of his passing so many years ago. As an adult, I find that I reflect not only on Mr. Binang's accomplisments and intellect, but of the magnitude of his patience and ability treat even those who met his kindness with disrespect (let's face it high school girls are not known for their kindness or cooperative nature, even at Ladywood) with the full force of Christian love. Even in a lifetime filled with examples of Faith and Joy, it would be difficult to find a person who exemplified these traits more consistently than Mr. Binang, as he seemed to strive every day to be a living example of God's presence in the lives of those around him. He taught our faith unapologetically, and did so with a kind of infectuous enthusiasm. All these years later, I have no doubt that Mr. Binang rests peacefully in the arms of the Lord. I regret that he was not permitted to share more years teaching students and sharing his light with those around him. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and close acquaintances.

I am so saddened by the news of Mr. Binang's death. He was such a sweet and caring man. We were his first group at Ladywood. He came to our 10 year reunion and was so excited to see us. He remembered our names, reminded us of things we did in his class, and caught up on what we were doing now. All of us who came in contact with him were blessed. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Binang was such a special person and teacher. I was also one of his first students at Ladywood. I always admired his positive energy and his sense of humor, which fostered his ability to connect with his students. Several students in our class kept in touch with him after graduation and we all enjoyed reuniting with him last November at our ten year reunion. The world will be a sadder place without Mr. Binang's smiling face and endearing laugh. He will be greatly missed, but because he touched so many lives, his spirit will carry on forever. I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, students and coworkers. Christine St. John (Class of '94)

Mr. Binang was brand new at Ladywood when I was a student. Everyone loved Mr. Binang's religion class, and all of his funny stories. I recently saw George at our 10 year class reunion. He was the only Ladywood teacher who cared to show up. He still had the same smile on his face, and he still remembered all of our names, and all of our quirks from high school. I always had a special relationship with Mr. Binang because we shared the same birthday. Every year he brought in something special for me. I am so saddened by this loss, but I'm sure he is pulling for all of us on the other side.

I knew and worked with George for 10 years at Ladywood. I considered him a friend and a briliant man with a great sense of humor, though he often remained very private and sometimes hard to know - but that is what made him so interesting and challenging- you just wanted to dig deeper into the man because you knew what was hidden was a gentle, good natured soul. His spontaneous outbursts of songs in his high, falsettto voice, his ability to tell outrageously funny fabrications with a poker face, his ability to balance a bottle of Coca-Cola on his head perfectly still, his putting up with all the practical jokes I pulled on him over the years, his gentle, almost child-like laughter, and his thirst for knowledge are the things that will always live in my memories of him. He was a better man than I, a true man of the God he worshipped, and I am grateful to have been touched by his presence and friendship. I shall never forget you, George, and I can't walk by your classroom without seeing you there at your desk, with your nose buried in a book, trying to fill your mind with even more knowledge than you already had in great abundance. Goodbye, my friend and peace. The world and Ladywood is a sadder place without you.

Some of my best memories of Ladywood come from Mr. Binang’s Religion Class. He spoke passionately about the church, his faith, his family, and his students. I remember how he would sing to the class, and tell us stories about his home in Boki. He loved his family and culture, I am glad that he got so spend his last days with them. I don’ t think he ever forget a student. Five years after I had graduated, I received a very nice letter from him, keeping me up to date on happenings in his life, and at school. I was touched that he remembered me after all those years. It has now been ten years and I have not, and never will forget him and the way he touched my life. Erin Worden 96’

I found out about Mr. Binang's passing at the same time as the news of Sal Malek's father passing away. What sad news for the Ladywood community. As others have mentioned, Mr. Binang was a kind and spiritual man who had cute stories for all of his students. His classes were enjoyable, and you knew what a truly Christian man he was if you were privileged to be in his classes. I know the shocking news has touched many of my friends from the Class of 96 who have heard what happened. We will all keep the current Ladywood girls and the Binang family in our prayers.

I don't even know where to begin this... It's been over a week since i found out and I am still at a loss for words. So many thoughts, memories, and jokes come to mind when I think of Mr. Binang. So many words that I would use to describe this man... kind, gentle, sweet... It's amazing how once you lose someone you try your hardest to remember every single word of wisdom they said to you. I've had a lot of loss in my life in the past 5 years and I'm never going to understand why it happens. Mr. Binang was one of the best teachers at Ladywood High School. He made jokes and even if they weren't funny, you couldn't help but laugh because he laughed at them himself. That laugh will ring in my ears forever, as well as his beautiful voice. He would always come join us in choir class, sit in the first soprano section and sing his heart out. We loved it. We loved him. He didn't deserve this premature death. I guess it was time for God to take his angel on earth back... leaving us with tears. You will be greatly missed, especially by me. Thanks for being a part of my life Mr. Binang. I miss you.

I had the oppertunity to have Morality with Mr. Binang my junior year. I remember the way he lit up when he taught.. teaching and religion were his two passions in life. He treated each student with respect, courtesy and kindness that is so hard to find in today's world. Everytime I stepped into his classroom, whether it was for class, waiting for a ride or taking pictures for yearbook, he always made me feel welcome and was always there if I needed to talk. Upon hearing about his death, I decided to look through some pictures that I took during my years at Ladywood.. including some of Mr. Binang at prom. While these pictures brought back memories.. it also tugged at some strings in my heart. I thought about the girls who won't have the chance to have him as a teacher. It also made me realize that although a bright spirit is gone.. it is not forgotten. Mr. Binang's spirit and that wonderful smile will live on in all of the lives he touched.. including my own.

George and I have known each other for 38 years! We started high school together. I was in school thirteen years at different levels of education with George in Nigeria. George was a brilliant student with the finest handwriting in class. He was very affable and honest. He was known for neatness and won several prizes for it in school. I was together in the choir with George. He had a passion for music and belonged to the special choir at Minor and the major seminaries. George could sing both the bass and the tenor. He played the trombone in the band group while I played both the tuber and the trumpet. He was so dedicated to whatever task he had to accomplish. He was meticulous, orderly and a good record keeper. He had a sense of humor with close friends. Though he did not succeed as a priest, yet he lived as good priest. He still said his breviary, kept his faith and devoted his energies supporting his family. George was a rare gem, a faithful friend and a man of peace. Adieu my good friend till we meet again. My condolences to your parents and all in the family.

Mr. George Binang was one of the most singluar human beings I have ever encountered. I am honored, sincerely honored, to have been taught by him. I admired him more with every class I had in his funny coconut-scented room. Although he seemed rather distant at times, it was VERY hard to remain unattached to him, unaffected by his little peculiarities. As a girl who values intelligence, unique insight, and education, I am sort of critical of teachers; I expect a lot from them--to know their information, to incite new thoughts, to effectively teach me those things I value. There have only been a few teachers in my life that have impacted me with their knowledge and care…Mr. Binang was one of those few, undoubtedly. I have lost a role model, a man of rare integrity, knowledege, and pride. The world has lost one of the few men who are undeniably good and true. Thanks for showing me goodness in humanity, Mr. Binang.

I loved walking down the Main Hallway to Room 60 where I would always see him doing what he did best. Ladywood will never be the same without his contagious laugh and warm smile. God broke our hearts to prove to us..he only takes the best.

Mr. Binang was a great man. He was definately a role model to all of us at Ladywood. He touched all of our lives in some way or another. I will always remember the wonderful times we had together, like the time he told us that in Nigeria they live in trees. There was never a day that went by where Mr. Binang failed to put a smile on my face. He changed my life and he will always be in my heart. God Bless you Mr. Binang. Jordan Giordano Class of 2006 May the angels take you upon their wings as you begin to form your own. May your wings help carry you through, as you provide the wings and life for others. Mr. Binang was one of the best teachers at Ladywood. He was also one of the greatest people I came in contact with in my high school career. His laughs, smiles, and light hearted personality is something that I will never forget. Mr. Binang's class was always one that relaxed me and made me feel comfortable because of how understanding and kind he was every minute of everyday. I loved being able to walk by Room 60 to say hi to Mr. Binang, who always had a smile on his face. Ladywood will never be the same without you, Mr. Binang. I love you & God Bless you!

Just like everyone before me, I could not believe that this great, wise and inspiring man had passed. It was indeed a depressing day to say the least. Being a LHS graduate from 2004, I spent most of my after-school time in Rm 60 where he resided. Unlike the vast majority of the other students, I did not possess a drivers license nor a car until my senior year. But even when I did, I could not leave at the end of the day without my daily visit to his room. From Freshman to Senior year, Rm 60 was my home. I would sit and talk to him about everything and I always enjoyed his company. He was such an uplifting man that could tell you something that meant so much in few words. There is no doubt that this man will be missed - Ladywood will not be the same without him. I am glad to have known such a colorful and blessed soul. May you rest in peace.

I will never forget the smell of his class room (the coconut air spray), the way he signed his tests GOOD LUCKGB, or the way he always used to look out the window while teaching. Who could remember ladywood without thinking about Mr. Binang. It hard picture to imagine. I can remember looking in my mailbox during holiday Sand always getting a card from him, even for graduation. He was devoted to his teaching, His student was his life, he will truthly be missed at LHS. If he saw a student having a bad day, he would makes sure they had a smile when he was done talking to him. The three years that i had him, i had always remember what he taught us, and how he was devoted to God. The most important lesson I learned from him was no matter how tough life can get, God and faith will always be there, even though the bad times. GOD BLESS YOU MR. BINANG, PEACE TO YOU, WE MISS YOU. BUT WE KNOW YOU ARE IN A BETTER PLACE FILLED FAITH. LHS will never be the same without you, no more singing or random oprah songs during class. There will never be a teacher like Mr. binang that impacted their students like he did. He touched the students hearts,, even though they didn't show it at that time. WE LOVE YOU MR. BINANG. I can remember going to Room 60 after school on the first day of my freshman year. I hardly knew anyone. That day, when I met Mr. Binang, I knew that I had met a great person. For the next three years I spent a lot of time in Room 60 waiting for my parents. During that time I talked with Mr. Binang a lot. Our conversations were never incredibly deep, but he never left at 230 without first putting a smile on my face. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Binang for my entire junior year. He was a very unique teacher, managing to make lectures informative and entertaining. Every class he had a funny story to tell us that related to the subject at hand. Now, as I enter my senior year, it is so strange to not see Mr. Binang, not to hear his gentle laugh or his high singing voice. As, I am still as much of a Room 60 girl as ever, it is painful to go to Room 60 everyday and know that I won't see him there with Mr. Bartone. I will miss Mr. Binang with all my heart and soul. I know that he is in heaven watching over each and every one of us now. May he rest in peace.

The first time I ever walked into Room 60, the first person I saw was Mr. Binang. I saw how cheerful and happy he was so I continued to come to Room 60, just to see Mr. Binang. I also remember him balencing a Coke bottle on his head during a lunch sequence. I know he liked to make us laugh to try to get closer to us students. On the last day of my freshmen year, i was the only student left in Room 60. So I started talking to Mr. Binang about school and stuff and i never thought i would never see him again. His death has been really hard on me, but I know he is watching over us in Heaven with God. I will meet Mr. Binang again whenever I die.

Mr. Binang was a favorite among many at Ladywood. Everyone wanted him as a teacher and also a friend. We each have our own memories of him, whether it was of his singing, telling jokes, his laugh, or even the way he would pat his belly. We will take our memories with us and be happy for him. He fulfilled his life to the greatest and I am sure he is at peace. His smile, personality and faith are many of the reasons why the Ladywood hallways will be that much more empty due to the loss of such a great man. I personally had Mr. Binang for almost 2 years and never learned more, laughed more and been more encourged than when I was in his class. Mr. Binang taught me more about God, religion, love, learning, tolerance, and life than any other teacher in my years of education has. He was an honorable man, with a wonderful sense of humor and gentle soul. I am sad that no more young women will benefit from learning from him. I know that his memory will remain alive at Ladywood. I just found out about Mr. Binang's death last night - June 22nd - almost 10 months after his death. I'm shocked and so, so sad. He was my favorite teacher at Ladywood. I remember his first day of class - he wrote his name on the board George Abang Binang, pronounced it for us, and then - to our delight - sang us a song in the highest, sweetest voice we'd ever heard. He was wonderfully patient with us, and so staunch in his faith. I kept in touch with him over the years. Sometimes he'd send an Applebee's gift card to me and write Take the kids out for dinner. He would have a Mass said for my husband, myself and our kids every Easter. I know he would have liked to meet a nice lady to marry. And he was proud of having just gotten his American citizenship a couple of years ago. He was one of the sweetest, kindest people I've ever met. I was so happy to see him at our 10 year reunion. We have great pictures of all of us with him and his sweet smiling face...his ever perfect flat-top. I'm glad he was able to see his family before he died. He surely was a quiet saint on earth, living the Little Way - touching so many - and he must be a Saint in Heaven now, singing (of course!) and hopefully praying for all of us. Mr. Binang I love you and will miss you very much. Regina (Berlucchi) Cates Ladywood Class of 1994
