We are so sorry to know of the loss of your dear mother! Darvie never ceased to amaze us with her zest for life, always ready to try a new adventure or challenge. Double knee replacement at age 88 and still she went x-country skiing and snow shoeing that winter. As recently as December 8th Darvie hiked with us along the Detroit River Walk with lunch in Mexicantown. She cared for everyone and shared their joys and sorrows with phone calls and cards. During her last stay in hospital she shared her experiences as a nurse in the 2nd World War following General Patton's troops in France. Then she served a while in Wales and we were laughing because I was just a child growing up there and we really loved the Yanks! Darvie loved to talk about her trip to Italy a few years ago with her 'grown children' and of her visits to grandchildren's special events. Our tuesday hikes will not be the same without Darvie. Our lives are richer for having known and loved her and we'll miss her so!

I am greatly saddened to hear about Darvie. I hope knowing that she is nothing but a positive memory to me and about 20 of my best students from Cass Tech High School will bring a smile to the faces of her family. A small group of 16 girls from Cass Tech were the first students to win the travel scholars scholarship through AYH. After traveling, they came back to share their experiences at our local AYH chapter. This same group also participated in nature outings with AYH. Even though the kids were sometimes very nervous about doing many new activities and anxious about speaking to board members, Darvie was very instrumental in making them feel confident, at home and capable of doing whatever task was put before them. She also influenced me which is evidenced by my sending this post from China. It’s no wonder that Darvie could make people strive to do new and great things since that is how she led her life. I wish her family the best and I am truly sorry for their loss.

Darvie was truly an amazing woman. She skied everday with us on a cross country skiing trip to Austria when she was 86 years old. Darvie was an inspiration to us all, and we all aspire to be as active as her when we reach our 80's and 90's. She will be greatly missed.

I met Darvie at the OPC in a water aerobics class. After the first class she invited me to go for lunch. That was the first time of many. Soon she was asking me to join her Red Hat group. Joining them and Darvie was one of the best things I ever did. We lunched, swam, hiked, golfed, lunched and so many other wonderful things. Darvie was the heart and soul of our group. There were many things she told us Clean your plate, Walk, don't take the elevator, Suck it up and do it. We seldom complied as we can't with her No tears, request. Each and every one of your Red Hat Sisters loved you dearly and have shred many tears. You are in our hearts.

I only had the privilege of knowing Darvie for a few years as a member of the OPC's 10 o'clock water aerobic class. I marveled at her wonderful sense of adventure, fun, and friendship. High on that long list of examples is the touching, outdoor, mock wedding of one OPC member to John Wayne - complete with minister, bride maids, ushers, best man and Darvie acting as the mother-of-the-bride! And to top it all off, a reception at Hooters! No standing still for Darvie there was always someplace to go, some adventure to have, some goal to reach. Yet her family was her heart. Indeed, that was my common ground with Darvie. Our families are what mattered most. Darvie, you have shown me what it means to live life fully each day. I miss you dearly. Know that you and your family are in my prayers.

To all of Darvie's family and friends I loved her. I worked with her my first year of teaching and on until she retired from the schools. Her upbeat character, her love of the outdoors, people and travel made me want to be just like her. She was such an inspiration I enjoyed every moment with her. She was one of the kindest people I've ever known to friends and strangers alike. She and my dad inspired my love of adventure. Oh, she loved an adventure whether it was playing golf with the teachers or travelling with Elderhostel or anything in between!! We shared a love of Health and Physical Education and had many wonderful conversations. She always invited me to stay at her place when I was in town. I will always remember her and miss her very much, but she'll always be alive in me because I wouldn't be the same person I am today if I hadn't known her.

Darvie volunteered at American Youth Hostels in the early '90s when I was the executive director. Her cheerful attitude, caring assistance to the youth who came into the office, her passion for outdoor activities and the environment endeared her to all. I always appreciated her wonderful sense of humor. It was a joy to to work along side her. God's comfort and peace to her family and friends.

My heartfelt condolences to all of Darvie's great family and friends.I first met Darvie way back in 1960! A trurer friend one could not find, and to have shared our faith, hopes, sorrows, laughs & family stories over these years has been a priviledge. Sharing her talents and wisdom made our world here on earth a better place. Thank you for our time with her, as we accept her journey on to again join the saints waiting for her in heaven.
