This is Vince Ventura. I was a student of Mr. Grier all throughout high school. He accepted me into the Academy when I was just 15 years old. I was referred to the Academy by Rose Randall. Every Saturday I looked forward to doing solos, duets and a choreographed choir directed by Audrey. My condolences to you Audrey. You always were such a kind a loving presence in my youth. I will never forget how much that I was taught. Specifically vocal jazz and scat singing of which he was a master. I would not be the singer I am today as Mr. Griers influence colored my life. Also how to use my instrument with color. Rest in peace Gene. You touched this crazy world with grace and love.
Love,
Vince

As an academy member for 3 years, not only did he help me be a better singer an performer but he gave me the tools to be a better man. To this day (22 years later) I still try and live by his mantra of Be the best you can be, without hurting others. Who loves you baby Mr. Grier!

Aduie -- So sorry I am so slow to learn of Gene's passing. I was sitting here playing piano this evening and as I made a 'glaring' error, my husband, Dan said, What was it Gene Grier used to call you at those Popourri Workshops Hammer Hands It made me smile and go to the computer to see what you two had been doing and was so saddened to see that Gene passed away at such a young age. If you remember, I accompanied for you two at those Popourri workshops at Moorhead State and in Iowa as well -- fond memories of you both and our times together in the evenings playing pool and enjoying burgers. Gene was a consummate musician, encouraging mentor, enjoyable companion and just a wonderful man to have known. I hope you are doing well and again, my sympathies for the loss of a wonderful man and colleague. I have former students who attended some of those workshops who remember you both with fondness as well. Love to you. Sandy Thimgan

Hi, Audrey I would be amazed if you (or Gene) remember me. In my last year at Montana State University, (1983) you did a workshop. I attended another in Iowa (some little college in NW Iowa), then one more in Spokane at Whitworth College. I thought I could (at that time, I thought I should) learn how to field a show choir. (I haven't directed a show choir since '85, or so, but I've directed many many musicals, more than I can count.) The two of you left quite a lasting impression on me (all good). I find myself thinking of you from time to time. Whenever I do, the though makes me smile. This morning, I saw Gene's name come up on a search I was doing, looking for choral music for this coming school year's groups. (I've been teaching near Reno for the past 26 years.) I googled him and found out he'd died 3 years ago. I felt so sad that I didn't follow up on the many many other impulses I'd had over the years to look you two up and maybe send along a note. I hope this note gets to you and finds you well (and rested) and continuing to have an amazing life. Much Love and Appreciation, Tom Fleming

Audrey, I have thought of you and Gene countless times over the last three decades. I first met the two of you at a music conference in Columbus, Ohio, then followed up on week long clinics you had at Kent State and also Flint. Even got you to come to Swanton H. S. to work with my students. Learned a lot of great ideas and new music to share with my choirs. We never really know just who we affect. We teachers know that, but in my case you were the teachers. Have thought of you fondly over the years. I moved from N.W. Ohio to Pittsburgh nine years ago to continue teaching closer to my grandchildren. I now have a month left in my career. It's been a long and good ride. Today while returning from a weekend trip I heard a song on the radio that brought back memories of the Griers. Once at home, I decided to Google Gene and see what the two of you were doing. I was surprised and saddened with what I found. My condolences to you. You were such a cutie teaching your choreography and Gene his songs. Those were the days! - Jeannette Campesino - Choral Director, Swanton H. S.

Mr. Grier was an amazing teacher. He touched his students' lives in quiet ways that others were not aware of. The Griers came into my life after a very socially difficult period. He taught a hurt, confused 13 year-old that it was okay to love herself as she was, and that there was no need to force herself into the box her classmates were trying to squeeze her into. He helped me to become a leader. He taught me to have faith in my abilities. He taught me to enjoy collaborating on something bigger than myself. He helped me learn to take direction and constructive criticism. He taught me that giving anything less than the best possible effort was disrespectful. Thank you Mr. Grier. I am a better musician, daughter, wife, mother, teacher--I am a better person because of your influence on my life. Thank you.

I was lucky enough to graduate Glassboro State College with Gene. Gene's voice was a major part of the select Concert Choir under Clancy Miller for his years there. I never missed a recital when Gene was scheduled to appear. Gene's subsequent success in sharing his gifts in music is just another example of the determination which he manifested in his playing football for the Profs and in his memorable weight loss program that he stuck to doggedly until he was at a slim and comfortable place. While many of us were slacking off in the lounge or the Co-op (fast food for 1966) Gene was running, running, running. It was a real treat to be lead by Gene in the GSC concert in 1986 (). I will miss the opportunity to ever see Gene again, but my life is better for my knowing him.

In Every Life moments occur and choices must be made. We often come to these moments without the knowledge or strength to stand for our own convictions. When I meet Gene I knew what was right and wrong but often was to young or intimidated to do the right thing' Gene showed me how to stand and be honest. How to not care what others thought as long as you knew it was right. He taught me reflexion in my action and most importantly to never be afraid or to proud to say you were sorry if you wronged another. These things I will always be grateful for and why any morning I wake and see a new fallen snow I think of Gene and his love for Christmas and music, his memory makes my heart fill with springtime and hope. Both you and Gene gave us invaluable gifts, not only musically, but in your fine exampleship of Christian Ministry. Genes legacy, and yours, lives on every time we raise our voices in worship. May you be enfolded and upheld, protected and blessed, totally immersed in Gods deep peace and love. Alleluia! Gwen, from The Christward Ministry Escondido, California

I know that this is a very difficult time for you and I understand that it might be difficult to return my email but I just needed to share my condolences. Outside of my parents I can think of no one that has had a more profound impact on my life then you and Gene. I have carried so many of the lessons I learned from the two of you into my adulthood. I am a better father, son, brother, friend and man because of my time with you. I can say with certainty that many people will look at the number of teachers and musicians that Gene helped inspire and think this is his legacy. Me, I look at my children and the kids I have coached over the last 20 years and know that all of them have heard about caring for one another, respecting our common cause, thanking and telling their parents they love them for the the sacrifices both big and small they have made for them to be there that day. These are messages that are sadly lacking from our society today but because Gene professed them so readily they will live on through me and through the many kids whose lives I have had the pleasure to be a part of. His legacy to me is in the hundreds of lives and family relationships he made better of people who never knew him and his enduring message of love and community. I love you and pray that you will find peace through this very sad time. I hope when the time is right we can celebrate his life with you and support you in some meaningful way. I am so sorry and I thank you for sharing him and yourself with me and my family we are richer for the experience! All my love!!

Dear Mrs. Grier - I was shocked to hear of Mr. Grier's passing. I haven't seen you two since 2000 when you. Mr. Grier, and Danielle sang like angels at my wedding. Your beautiful voices made it a day to treasure. I know how deeply you and Mr. Grier loved each other and it breaks my heart to know the pain you are going through right now. Mr. Grier was a beautiful glowing soul. Saturdays at Academy were the highlight of the week. You and Mr. Grier gave us students the opportunity to experience music on a much higher level than we were able to gain from music in high school. We also learned life lessons that taught us to be positive thinkers and good people. The music is living on in heaven. Mrs. Grier, please call if you need anything. 248-342-1987. I am so sorry for your loss.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news about Mr. Grier's passing ... I wanted to express my deepest condolences to his wife Audrey and his family and to all of the people who he touched throughout the years. I was an awkward teenager like so many others when I was accepted into the Academy Of Popular Vocal Arts and I feel like Mr. Grier helped shape me into the man I am today. I can't tell you how many times in my life I have quoted Mr. Grier, YOU are in control of the quality of you OWN life, no one else!. If you want something to happen you gotta make it happen, and Mr. Grier, I hope you realize that when the question is asked Who Loves Ya, Baby, that the answer is ALL OF US!!! You will be GREATLY missed!

Gene and Audrey Grier made a huge impact on my life as they did on all they touched. You cannot think of one without the other for these loving and giving educatormentors are without equal. The lessons they taught were not only about music but about living life and giving your whole heart and soul to those you love. Gene and Audrey, you have my love and gratitude for what you gave to each of us and we in turn have given to those we have touched because of you. You inspired me to be a teacher and a better human being and when a few years back I was enduring terrible hurt and pain, your lessons sustained me and gave me comfort and strength. I thank God for you! Mrs. Grier, you are in my prayers. You are the great woman behind the great man as he always credited you. Even now, I am certain that his love and comfort will always live in your heart for Your Hearts ARE Full of Spring.

Dear Gene, we've shared over 40 years of friendship, a unique one at that. We've also worked closely as colleagues in the field that brought us together-music. What a treat for me to have met a man who truly loved our field. Even more to me, you were also a kind and 'gentle' man who made 'us' feel appreciated. Thank you for having entered my life--there are not enough accolades to express what a decent individual you were. I look forward to our crossing paths again in the future. God bless you, Pal. John D
