Obituary of Robert Arthur Sack
Robert (Bob) Sack, 85, of Beverly Hills, Michigan passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, October 22, 2017. His children and wife sang him to sleep the night before he passed. He will be remembered as a kind, caring gentleman, devoted to his wife and family, his music, his church and community.
Bob was born in Lansing, Michigan on October 30, 1931 to Elsie (Kloepfer) and Arthur Sack. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Susanne (Sue); children Diane (Joe) Pulsone, Linda Sack, Sandy (Andy) Pierce, Chris (Heather) Sack, sister, Arlene Rice, eight grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and granddog. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Bob graduated from Lansing Eastern High School. He received a full-ride scholarship to Michigan State University in Music, completing bachelor and masters degrees. He participated in ROTC and joined the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command (SAC). He then worked for Burroughs Corporation (Unisys) in finance for 32 years. On December 15, 1962 he married his one true love, Susanne Kay Bondy. On assignment for Burroughs, they lived in Fribourg, Switzerland, and Maidenhead, England.
Bob began studying the clarinet in junior high school and played throughout his life, inspired by the great Benny Goodman. He played in the Michigan State Spartan Marching Band and Alumni Band, including the 1953 winning Rose Bowl game. From 1985 to 2010, Bob performed with the Birmingham Concert Band, serving as band president for 17 years. For 50 years, he added his beautiful tenor voice to the Chancel Choir at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Birmingham. Bob loved taking trips with his family, providing memorable childhood experiences for them in the States and abroad.
Bob served on the boards of Gleaners Community Food Bank, Birmingham Area Seniors Coordinating Council (BASCC), Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition and many other non-profit organizations. He also served as an elder at Redeemer.
A memorial service will be held at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on Saturday, November 4, 2017. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. Service at 11:00 a.m., 1800 West Maple Road, Birmingham, Michigan 48009.
In celebration of Bob's life, a scholarship fund has been set up to benefit music students. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Birmingham Concert Band, noting in the check memo Bob Sack Scholarship Fund. Mail to P.O. Box 335, Birmingham, MI 48012.
