Obituary of David John King
DAVID JOHN KING, age 53, died on March 24, 2018 at Greenfield Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Royal Oak, where he resided for 8 years. A beloved father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, David died of chronic progressive complications related to a traumatic brain injury from a 1984 bicycling accident. Davids miraculous recovery was featured in a 1985 issue of the Beaumont Quarterly Magazine. The story, The Gentle Rebel Rides His Roughest Race, chronicled his journey through surgical intervention, acute hospital care, and rehabilitation, from what was normally a fatal injury.
David made the very best of his life-altering injury. He lived the life he almost lost with strength, focus and love. David worked, married and became a father. His son, Ian, will soon be a licensed Aviation Technologist.
David graduated from Troy Athens High School in 1983 and attended Oakland Community College before his accident. He loved fitness and cycling. He also had a passion for cars. Before the accident David engineered the restoration and customization of a 1971 Chevelle convertible with brother Donald. It won the 1st-place trophy at the GM Tech Center custom car show. David was a dedicated and well-respected employee wherever he worked. He was a stay-at-home father in Ians early years and shared custody after his divorce.
David is survived by his son, Ian King, his devoted mother, Frances King, and his siblings: Valerie (John) Frederick; Victoria King (James Kors); Daniel King (Janice Park); Douglas (Laurie) King; Donald (Diane) King. Davids father, Jack B. King, preceded him in death. Many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends honor him.
A celebration of Davids remarkable life will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the home of Victoria King and James Kors, 30231 Embassy St., Beverly Hills, MI 48025, where David lived for 7 years prior to his entering the nursing home.
