Oh my goodness, I've been thinking about Joan the last few weeks... having rejoined the board of the Metro Detroit ONS, I recalled how, as finance person, she made us make and keep to a budget every year. I really appreciate that discipline more than ever, although it was a bit of a pain at the time! More than that, however, Joan was such a huge leader in oncology nursing in Detroit, I was privileged to work for her at Michigan Cancer Foundation Home Care, a nursing service she envisioned and led with grace and determination. She was quiet and diminutive, but exerted powerful influence on her staff and friends, and enriched us all by her life. What a life well lived!

Oh my. I’m so sorry to learn of Joan ‘s passing. I’m one of the nurses who worked with her for many years at the Michigan Cancer Foundation Home Care and also served with her on several committees of the metro Detroit Oncology Nursing Society. I learned so much from her! She was admired and respected.

I am sorry to hear of Joan’s passing. She was a wonderful oncology nurse. She hired me for my second job only one year out of nursing school at MCF. I will always remember her getting tools out of her car after I locked my keys in my car on one of my first days working with her. She calmly got the door open for me! I realized then what a great person she was- she fixed problems and moved on calmly. She mentored me to be the news letter editor for MDONS and just told me to “edit away!” the author wants to have a good piece so if there are mistakes, just fix them. To this day I smile when I think of how much she care about oncology nursing and all of the patients at MCF. I was always proud to work with Joan. She was an inspiration to all oncology nurses and we missed her a lot when she retired.
