Obituary of Harold LaVern Schulz

Harold (Harry) L. Schulz died at the age of 91, on July 8, 2019 at his home in Rochester, Michigan; he departed his life lovingly surrounded by his wife Martha, and daughters Janis and Joy Lynn. Previously, Harold lived with his wife in the home they built together in Tecumseh, Michigan from 1989 to 2017. Prior to that, they resided in Wayne, Michigan where they raised their family. Harry and Martha also lived the snow-bird life in Estero, Florida from 1982 - present. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Louise Schulz, four brothers, Paul Raymond, Kenneth, Richard, and Ralph, and brother-in-law, John Lawson. Harold is survived by his wife of almost 70-years, Martha, and two daughters, Janis (Douglas) Hodgkins, and Joy Lynn (Mark) DePoyster. Harold was the proud grandfather of Kristen Hodgkins Braun (Dustin), Kyle Hodgkins, Caitlin Simmons Veazey (James Michael), Daniel Simmons, and Kelsey Simmons, four great-grandchildren, and his youngest brother, Allan Schulz. Harold was born on October 7, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan living in his family home until he entered the Merchant Marines on July 3, 1945 at age 17. Upon honorable discharge, Harold returned home and began a trucking and landscaping business with his brother, Ray. After a brief courtship, Harold married the love of his life, Martha, in 1950. In 1953, Harold began a new career with Wayne County Road Commission where he was employed in various capacities until his retirement in 1981. Besides following his dream of building his own home, Harry was also an avid golfer, fisherman and wood-worker. Harry took great pleasure in cooking his family-famous BBQ chicken, which was enjoyed by friends and loved-ones. Harry was a proud and loving family man, with a tender heart seen by those who loved him most. His favorite past-time was spending family time supporting the endeavors of his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating Harolds life will be held on August 24, 2019 at Parkside Church of Christ in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 am, with the service immediately following at noon. As a proud WW II Veteran, Harold selected Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan as his final resting place.
