Obituary of Mary H. Higgs

Celebrating the Life of Mary Helen Higgs Mary Helen Higgs, age 89, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023, in Macomb Township, Michigan. From her birth on November 14, 1933, in Rutherford, Tennessee, until her death, she was a beacon of love and light. She was the oldest daughter of Golden Clay and Pauline Higgs, who both preceded her in death. At an early age, she relocated with her family from the south to Detroit during the great northern migration in the early 1950s. It was family first for Mary and the kitchen was her canvas to prepare delicious soul food cherished and celebrated by many. She was an excellent cook, and her meals were not just nourishment but an expression of love. The gift of love radiated through everything she did, including her long-serving career with Sears, where she was consistently recognized as a top saleswoman in the jewelry department. After retirement, she later returned to the sales floor part time, she swept her colleagues once again in top sales. Of course, Mary’s own jewelry collection reflected her success; she had a penchant for 14 karats, and diamonds were her best friend.

Mary, a certified nail technician, received her training at Crockett Technical. Women and men sought her out for her master skills. She was also an adept makeup artist, who never knew an occasion for not dressing well and wearing lipstick. Known for style and flair, she had an extensive wardrobe and shoe collection. The oldest of five siblings also loved to travel, enjoying cruises, frequent trips to Atlanta, Milwaukee, and cities around the country. And she loved music, especially the blues – among her favorite artists, B.B. King.

Mary is survived by her three children: Darrel Higgs (Cassandra), Ronald Higgs (Mellony), and Regina Denise Porter (Alan); grandchildren: Tamiea, Kenny, Brandon, Derico, Darrel Jr., Marsalis, and Noni; 11 great grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy, and brother Willie. Her sister, Imogene and youngest brother, Ricky, preceded her in death. Her legacy also includes nieces Tomika and Gina Rhena; nephews Eddie Jr., Kerry, Antonio (deceased), Ricky, Jr., Stacey, and Rodney (deceased). 

She was loved by many and left an indelible mark on her family and community.
