Dear Bob,
When first we met at UW those many years ago, your smile and friendly welcome were there to greet me. The time we shared as grad students at UW, brief though it was, were some of the most meaningful and formative years of my life. We shared a lot of laughs, and we experienced our individual hardships, and you were always there to talk to when I felt overwhelmed by the challenges of my life in those days.
You always – always – offered encouragement and uplifting suggestions. I will never forget that, nor will the impact it had on my life ever be diminished. We went our separate ways for many years, pursuing our individual careers. I am so happy, however, that we reconnected some years ago, and that we renewed our friendship – rather, picked up where we left off, for it seemed to me that little had changed in the way we related with each other. I will always be so very grateful for those memories, but most of all I am grateful for having known you and for having you call me your friend.
