Obituary of John P Frost

John Phillip Frost’s love of life didn’t come to an end with his death. John passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2023, at the age of 90. In his final days he was surrounded by his family and loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. In the years since returning to Michigan, John lived with and was cared for by his daughter Rebekah where he enjoyed the frequent visits of his children and grandchildren who admired him so. John and his family were blessed to have dear friends nearby who offered care and support along the way; most notably, Gyda Carrick, who came to be an extension of the family in the thoughtful ways she demonstrated her good will and regard for all. 

John’s greatest happiness was found in his family. He was the son of the late Edgar Ray and Mary Ann (Balewicz) Frost. John was also predeceased by his brother Paul Raymond Frost, Sally Ann (Abler) Frost his wife of 35 years, his son Matthew Clay Frost and his great grandson Jaden Aron Winters. John and Sally were the proud parents of their children Mark A Frost (Jane Frost), Kamilla M Frost (Tom Santo, deceased), Kathleen A McPeek (Daniel McPeek), Craig R Frost (Michelle Frost), Theresa L Frost, Rebekah Frost Serwach (John Serwach), and Garth J Frost. John was blessed with a great many grandchildren; Tiffany Matuzak (Andrew), Brittany Frost-Doherty (David), Sean Winters, Jared Winters, John T Frost, Joseph McPeek, Rachel McPeek, Jessica Frost (Joe Bassman), Crystal Ziolkowski (Justin), Rhyan Frost (Cece), Joshua Frost, Christian T Frost, Andrew Serwach, Kaitlyn Serwach; his great grandchildren Skylar Payment, Tristin Winters, Isabella Winters, Vincent Matuzak; his great-great grandson Robert Marshall Jr., and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

John was a great thinker, he took pleasure in going down memory lane, recounting his mother’s immigration to the United States, stories of his parents’ history, his early childhood and growing up on Lowell Street with many aunts, uncles and cousins nearby. John had many four-legged companions over the years and often spoke of them. Fuzzy, Bingo, Curly, LaBeau, Misty, Summer, Zuzu, Steel, and most recently Philo and Lexi who often made it their personal business to sneak into his room to lick a hand and any crumbs that might be found near his bed. When asked, he would say Summer was his favorite.

John often talked of his happiest years being when his children were young. He could be found outside tinkering with various automobiles, playing ball with his children and neighborhood kids. He coached his boys in basketball and attended his children’s sporting events throughout the years. He was an avid card player, usually pinochle, and of course poker. The family frequently took trips up north to Sault Saint Marie to visit his brother and his family.

John spent many years working for Saint Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. He later worked for Jackson State Prison in Michigan and ended his career working for the State of Michigan in Detroit as a supervisor in the records department from which he retired in 2003 when he was 70.   

Post retirement, the simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to John. He loved to read; newspapers, books, even phonebooks. He was an avid political and history buff, enjoyed westerns and old movies, classical music, and western movie soundtracks. He had an uncanny ability to find contentment in his daily activities and especially enjoyed a good debate with his children on any number of topics, often political, at the most inopportune times (on purpose!).
