Jean Carmichael

Obituary of Jean Elizabeth Carmichael

In 1985, Jean Elizabeth Carmichael sailed to England on the Queen Elizabeth 2 and returned as a passenger on the SST Concorde. Following that amazing trip, Jean set sail through the Panama Canal on a cruise. These were just some of the adventures she had throughout her long, well lived life.

Born May 18, 1923 in Winnipeg, Canada, she became a citizen of the United States at the age of 19. She was proud of her Canadian roots, and many of her extended family reside there still.

She graduated cum laude from East Commerce High School, Detroit Michigan in June 1940. She continued her collegiate education in bookkeeping and office administration. She was, for many years, the executive secretary to Spike Briggs, Jr. past owner of the Detroit Tigers from 1952 - 1956. She mentioned that she designed the jockey silks for Mr. Briggs’ first racehorse. She continued as corporate secretary after Mr. Briggs’ death in 1970. She retired in 1989 after serving several years as office manager for Lacey & Jones.

She is pre-deceased by her parents, Duncan and Matilda (Schollenberg) Carmichael, as well as her life long friend and companion Betty Ouellette. She will be well remembered by many.

At her request, she has been cremated and her ashes will be sprinkled in the Rose Garden at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church.
