Obituary of Myra A. Smith

Myra Ann Smith was born to Charlie and Reanna Hill on June 22, 1948 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. She was the second child of five. Myra graduated from Benton Harbor High School in June 1966 with two varsity letters in cheer.  She understood that “education is the great equalizer” and as a result Myra worked to receive a well-deserved Associates Degree in Business from WCCCD in May 2000.

Myra became employed with the United States Postal Service as a young wife and mother in 1968, where she was ultimately promoted to Supervisor before retiring in 2008.  She was also a long-time member of Network, Inc. & the Postal Women’s Committee.

Myra was a “home girl” who often reminisced about the days of her youth. She would speak of her times working at the Tastee Freeze and the local record store.  She never lost her love for music and dancing, and often took ballroom and hustle lessons “just for fun”.

Myra loved Pastor Claude & First Lady Sytoria May, and her entire Oasis of Hope Christian Church Family!!!  Prior to the pandemic, she rarely missed the opportunity to attend Sunday School, Sunday Service, and Bible Study. She completed Biblical Counseling, served as an usher, and was a member of the Golden Glories.  Her “Spiritual gift of helps” left a lasting impression on her Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

On the afternoon of October 17, 2023 Myra went from labor to reward at home with her daughter, Lisa, ever by her side.

Myra is survived by her former spouse, Simon Smith, her three children, Lisa Smith, Lorinzo Smith, Sr. and Sekou Smith, all of Detroit, MI.  She also leaves to mourn, 6 grandchildren --Lorinzo Smith, Jr., Kyra Smith, Mya Smith, Demetrius Stearns, Danielle Stearns, and Simaiyah “Yaya” Velazquez, twelve great-grandchildren, sister Sandra Courtney (Bennie Sr.) of Jackson, Mississippi, brother Lonnie Hill (Diana) of Muskegon, Michigan, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
