Obituary of Helene Jean Mahoney

Helene J. Mahoney passed away peacefully the evening of November 22, 2023. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty‐two years, Lawrence J. Mahoney Jr. and their son, Lawrence J. Mahoney III.  She will be interred with her husband, at a future date, at Great Lakes  National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.  A Memorial Mass will be held on January 5th at 10AM at  St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. 

Helene Jean Schmidt was born on January 22, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan the third of what would  be four daughters of Edward Raymond Schmidt and Helen Edna Dyar Schmidt.  She is survived  by one sister, Mary Krum Lanig, and predeceased by two sisters, Rita Herpel and Joan Brand.  She attended Gesu Catholic Grade School and Immaculata All Girls Catholic High School, both in  Detroit. She married Lawrence J. Mahoney Jr. on August 1, 1953.   Helene is survived by three living children and their spouses‐ Colleen Schwarz (Per Burchardt), Terrence Mahoney (Mary  Lou) and Maureen Scapini (Michael).  Additionally, she was a proud grandmother to eight, and  great‐grandmother to eight and many grand puppies.  

Helene was well‐loved for her sunny smile and her interest in others, making her a good friend  of many.  She lived in St. Clair Shores, Mio, Macomb Township and most recently, at Wellbridge  of Romeo in Romeo, Michigan.  She enjoyed an active retirement with her husband, Larry, and  always looked forward to gatherings of the family and special friends, especially at  Thanksgiving. Her warm personality, love of family, strong faith, support of others, and spunk  will be missed.  She has left her mark on many hearts.
