Obituary of Gary Jerome Morris

In Loving Memory of Gary Jerome Morris

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Jerome Morris on February 17, 2024. Born on July 25, 1962, to Frank and Cynthia Morris in Detroit, Michigan, Gary touched the lives of many through his unwavering faith, profound love for family, and dedication to community.

Gary's journey in life was marked by love and commitment. In 1977, he met the love of his life and prayer partner, LaTanya, at Henry Ford High School. Last July, they joyously celebrated 10 years of marriage, building a haven of love and laughter together. Known as the 'Velcro Couple,' their inseparable bond was a testament to the enduring strength of their love.

A devoted Christian, Gary's faith in Jesus was the guiding force in his life. He considered it a privilege to uplift, encourage, and pray for others, particularly the youth, as demonstrated through his involvement in gospel plays. His message of love and wisdom resonated with all who had the privilege of hearing it.

Professionally, Gary dedicated 24 years to Wayne State University / Computing & Information Technology, leaving an indelible mark on the Infrastructure Team as the Lead Applications Technical Analyst for Video Surveillance Services. His advocacy extended beyond the workplace, as he served as President of the Local UAW 1979 Professional and Administrative Union, passionately representing the voiceless.

Gary's impact reached far beyond the professional realm. As an elementary basketball coach and referee, he mentored the youth, exemplifying his dedication to community and generous spirit.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, LaTanya Hall-Morris; his parents, Frank and Cynthia Morris; siblings David Morris, Scott Morris (Tracey), Ryan Morris, Gena Morris, and Adam Morris (Lola); nieces Bree Flournoy, Nia Morris, Corrine Morris, Chantel Morris, Bianca Morris, Tia Morris; and nephew Adam Morris, Jr.

A man of faith and family, Gary was cherished as an amazing husband, son, brother, nephew, uncle, son-in-law, and brother-in-law. He loved life and family, finding joy in ballroom dancing, acting in commercials and Christian plays, singing in the church choir, and coaching and playing sports. Gary's role as a family man was the one he treasured above all others.

Gary's infectious smile, calm voice of reason, and advocacy for others will be deeply missed. His love for Jesus, life, and people, evident in his warmth and kindness, created a beautiful collection of family, friends, and colleagues who were touched by his presence. His legacy of love and compassion will forever echo in our hearts.

In Honor of Gary’s Memory

My Sweetheart, my Honeybun, my Love, you are the husband I dreamed of and prayed for…a gift beyond measure from the Lord Jesus. Loving, handsome, and a gentleman with a smile that warmed my heart and a sense of humor that tickled my fancy. I found comfort in your laughter, I discovered joy in your eyes, and I felt pure love from your heart. I love the way you’d bring me flowers and wrap me in a bear hug when you knew I had a rough day. I appreciate how you lived your life like one of your favorite Bible verses: Ephesians 4:32 “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.” I am grateful to the Lord for the gift of your love. I miss you terribly and I will ALWAYS love you.  Love, Honey’s Baby

Gary Morris was the oldest son of Frank and Cynthia Morris. His siblings are David Morris, Scott Morris, Ryan Morris, Gena Morris, and Adam Morris. Gary was a leader, mentor, and friend to his siblings. We will miss him greatly. We are supportive to his beautiful wife, LaTanya Hall-Morris.  Love, Mom & Dad

I was blessed to have the best big brother a little sister could ever have. Gary taught me about good decision making, finances, relationships, sports, class, dancing, family, and prayer to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I will miss you, Gary.  Love, Gena

Gary, my true Brother! Gary taught me many things necessary as a young man, like how to drive a car, how to strive in sports while in high school, and to complete my college education. He also bought many things for me like clothes, shoes, and many other things I desired as a kid. He became a good mentor as I grew older showing how, with hard work, faith, and education, I could live a life of happiness and success. There were countless times he was there for me, including my high school graduation, college graduation, and getting to know my children and new wife, Lola Morris. Gary called me about a week before he passed just to say hello and we talked about us all seeing each other again soon. You are with our Lord Jesus Christ now Gary. Rest in peace, to the best brother, mentor, and friend!  Love, Adam

As a young man, I recall playfully wrestling with Gary, then just a child, alongside his brother David and his Uncle Steve on the floor of my mother’s living room. Years later, I had the privilege of coaching Gary on a youth baseball team where he was one of the top players and a natural leader. In the passage of time, Gary, now a grown man, offered me prayers and support during a particularly challenging period in my life, fostering a deep bond between us. Our conversations included matters of work, life, and notably, our shared faith in God, solidifying our friendship. He will forever remain in my heart as both a cherished nephew and a dear friend. Though his absence leaves a void, his memory will endure eternally. I count myself immensely blessed to have had Gary’s presence enrich my life.  Love, Uncle Bruce

Gary was a wonderful son-in-law. I called him ‘How You Doin’. I don’t know why I called him ‘How You Doin’, but I did. He was such a nice guy who treated my daughter like a queen. After 10 years of marriage, he was still opening doors for her and giving her little kisses throughout the day. He was wonderful and will be missed.  Love, Mom-in-law.

‘Brother-in-law Gary’ was never a title, he was always family. His humble nature, kind words, and sense of humor were truly admirable. I will always be grateful for the unconditional love he and my sister shared. Their genuine love, joy, respect, and unity towards each other were obvious to everyone. We love and miss you brother-in-law.  Love, Renee

Gary and I had great conversations about everything…literally! From family, politics, local and national news, cars, sports, and good old common-sense topics. It was refreshing to know how like-minded we were. I discovered that Gary had a hilarious sense of humor and made me laugh hysterically. More importantly, his love for my sister was infectious. These are our bonds that will never be broken.   Love, Frank
