Obituary of Arlon Brayton Quigley

Arlon B. Quigley, born June 27, 1925, passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 2020, at the age of 94. He was surrounded by his loving family as they kept a vigil for 4 days. Arlon is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Evelyn Quigley, two brothers Fred Jr. and John, his first wife Ruth Phillips Quigley, 3 children Margaret, Arlon Jr, George, and step-son John. Arlon is survived by his wife Peg Petersen Quigley, his children Kathy Binning, David (Kathy) Quigley, Karen (John) Waynick, Burns (Linda Lau) Petersen, Jim Petersen, and Susan (Stefan Frembgen) Petersen, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Arlon graduated from Michigan State University, earning a swim team varsity letter. He was a salesman for Hines Lumber and switched to teaching to be home more with his growing family. He went back to college, earning a Masters while teaching and raising a family. He was employed by the Royal Oak School District for over 30 years, working as a teacher, counselor, and assistant principal ending his career at the Vocational Center. Arlon coached and taught swimming throughout his life. He taught himself to needlepoint during his first wifes illness, and continued to needlepoint until his last year. He completed numerous pieces to display and to give as gifts to his children and grandchildren. Arlon enjoyed a long and active retirement. He and Peg competed in the Senior Olympics at state and national levels earning multiple medals including golds. Arlon has lived the past 16 years at Fox Run, where he served on committees including the Resident Advisory Committee. He would be found playing bridge, cribbage, Sequence, socializing and leading water aerobics. A celebration of life is scheduled at the Fox Run Retirement Community in Novi, MI on February 22, 2020, at 11:00 in the Performing Arts Center in the Belmont Clubhouse. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be sent to the Scholarship Fund at Fox Run or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
