I only knew her for a year that I spent reading to her one day each week, but what a wonderful person. She was always in good humor, tried to keep current with world events, and more concerned with others than herself. I will miss her.

I fondly remember Martha and my special visits with her in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan with Ted and Tricia Schaefer (my sister). We found that we immediately shared common interests in the arts, natural sciences and family, especially a deep love and concern for our families. Martha has left behind a very beautiful multi-generational family I know will miss her terribly and will always love and remember her for the wonderful mother and Nana she has been to them. I send my love, concern and sympathy to her entire family.

We. the (longtime) residents of Northfield Hills fondly remember Martha as she cross country skied across the grounds of the complex and in the summer swam in the pool each day. She was a wonderful neighbor and dear friend of many and her kindness and positive outlook on life will not be forgotten. She will be missed. We offer her family our prayers and condolences.

We watched her show us the skies as she gave her planetarium talks, splash her feet in whatever lake, stream, ocean was nearest. She gave our children great summers at camps, letting them live with their Nana, teaching them to swim and dive. She loved the arts. She gave to every liberal cause and environmental group she found (and they all found her). She was engaged in the world and politics, loved seeing other cultures. She was a mother to me when I lost mine just one year after my marriage to her son, Ted. I will miss her silly extra gifts at Christmas time, the nature walks, how much she cared. She was fun. I am so grateful and proud she was my mother-in-law.

We loved Martha. She set an example for always putting others first, for being aware and informed on what's happening in the world, for having a good sense of humor, and for wanting to participate whenever and wherever she could--even into her 90s! An amazing woman, mother, grandmother, and friend.

I must say 1000 characters is not enough to say how I feel about my Nana and the emptiness I feel inside due to her passing away. She has always been my role model and inspiration. She taught many of us how to be wise, caring independent liberal women. She was unconditionally loving and gave freely of her heart (and money). I feel blessed to have been born into such an amazing family in which Nana inspired. I often think, WWND (What Would Nana do) to guide me when I am lost. I will try to condense all I would like to say into an abbreviated list of fond memories of Nana Schaefer swimming in her cold pool, going home hungry after eating her cute little Monday night dinners, burnt toast, big hugs, comfort, prayers, my Sunday School teacher, playing with her bracelets, skipping rocks, feeding the ducks, Cranbrook and the magic she brought there, swimming side stroke, long walks on the beach, her support for me and my life situations, her letters to me while I was alone at the U of A, her wonderful nana gifts for all!, her love of reading, her intelligence, her great stories, her request that guests get a different chair rather than move her cats, NANA CLAUSE appearing on Christmas and freaking out Mandy and Melissa, her silly jokes, her sense of humor, the touch of her hand, greasy burgers and sweets, her dog George, the card games she taught me, the science experiments we did... As you can see, there was so much to my Nana that I could go on and on. I will end by saying that I miss you Nana and this world will never be the same without you and your kind heart.

What to say about such a special person Martha was a classic is so many terrific ways. She was on the staff when I lucked into my perfect 'first' job at Cranbrook Institute of Science. As a rookie in the museum world, I learned so much from her about the museum, it's history, and the way to capture the attention of a wiggly student audience. She could even do that while running the Planetarium in total darkness. Martha was an inspiration I will miss her and I will remember her whenever I watch the stars.

Martha was a dear friend and mentor to me when I joined Cranbrook Institute of Science Educ. Dept. She had the unenviable task to try to teach me how to run the planetarium and give astronomy programs. That was probably one of her few failures in life but she never got upset with my ineptness and never gave up on trying. She and Jim remained my dear friends all the time that I lived in Michigan. I miss them both.

Martha was an amazing and delightful person. She sparked my interest in astronomy when I was in the 7th grade and went on a field trip to the planetarium. Later she changed the course of my life; she was directly responsible for my working at that planetarium. Her guidance and mentoring helped me to sharpen my skills, and some of her techniques live on in my presentations today. Martha was unflappable. When the meteor projector failed during a show, she used the pointer to improvise a meteor shower. When a planet on the original planetarium projector burned out, without missing a beat she explained it must have disappeared behind a cloud. Individual planets didn’t burn out with the new planetarium projector, but the star lamp was prone to falling out of its mount. Improvising when the universe abruptly went dark was more of a challenge! We had great fun (as well as frustration) learning to operate that new projector. I was saddened to learn of Martha’s passing, but I find solace in the wealth of wonderful memories I have from knowing her.

Nana, you were so special, I find it hard to put into words my feelings regarding your passing. From my earliest memories as a young boy, I remember you as being fun, full of energy, and bright (with the big jewelry especially!), but also quite wise and thoughtful. As I got older I realized these memories were accurate, but that you were remarkably caring, honest and generous as well. You were truly an amazing person, and I feel blessed to have been part of your family and to have learned so much from you. And as sad as I am to see you go, I am at peace knowing you lived a full and happy life. We will all miss you. Love, Matt

Nana, I will miss you so much! Thank you for all those summers at the pool; for all those hilarious Christmas gifts; for the wonderful theater camps; for teaching me to dive and play 13 Hands. Thank you for your eternally calm, kind, patient and compassionate guidance. Thank you for being such an amazing, beautiful grandmother.

League of Women Voters of Troy Area, Pam Brady, Vice President posted a condolence
Monday, April 6, 2009
Martha was, for many years, an active member of the League of Women Voters of Troy Area. She served as Co-President for some terms and was helpful for as long as her health allowed. At an age when the rest of us would have hung up our spurs, she walked with us in the Troy Daze Parade for the entire 3 miles of the parade route without even flinching...and in sandals! When our League of 30 members, about 10 of them active, was charged with compiling and printing the entire Oakland County Voter Guide (taking probably 1,000 people hours), she'd host us at her home, set up some extra tables for us to work, saw to it we had munchies to keep up our strength, and encouraging words to keep up our morale. At other meetings at her home, it was difficult to concentrate since she had so many interesting nic nacks, everything from a collection of animals sculptures (turtles or frogs, I don't remember now which) to neat rocks to fancy dressed dolls. Talk about eclectic! And the books, the magazines, the newspapers. Wow! No wonder she was a go-to resource for just about anything. We'll miss her alot but she is not gone. She will live on in our actions and thoughts as the mentor she truly was to all of us who knew her. What a role model you were to us, Martha. If we can do a small portion of what you did, we can consider our lives a success! Thank you for everything you did for and were to us! Love from all your girls.

Nana, I love and miss you beyond words. Many of my childhood’s happiest times were with you in Michigan. It’s hard to believe so many years have passed because they are still so clear in my mind. I have a tendency to forget the bad times of my childhood, and remember the happy; so this speaks volumes that I remember my visits with you, Nana, so vividly. I will always carry memories of your years of happiness and vitality. Your intelligence, compassion and above all love never faded. When Tony and I visited you a little over a year ago, you said “I love him,†to me about my boy. I can still hear your voice. It was really beautiful. I will share this with him along with all of the wonderful things about you that make you you. Love, Beth

Martha was such a wonderful inspiration to all her family, friends and friends of the family. My first memory of Martha was her as my brownie leader and my last and one of my favorites was enjoying holding her hand and singing Christmas Carols while Terry played his guitar at Sue and Denny's this last Christmas. What a darling lady and a lady she was.

Martha had wide-ranging intellectual curiosity which she passed on to her three outstanding children and many grandchildren. She read widely on many subjects up to the end of her generous life. All of us who loved her rejoice that her political idealism was rewarded in November, 2008.
