Obituary of John L. Albrecht
John Louis Albrecht Passed away March 30, 2020. He was 88 years old and had been preceded in death by wife, Ruth, on Nov 19, 2019 and his sister Shirley on June 30, 1997. John and Ruth had a 61 year long and happy marriage with two children, Dawn Szelc and David Albrecht. They also have a daughter-in-law, Monica, and three grandchildren Jessica and Matthew Szelc and Daine Albrecht. John was born and raised in Detroit, MI, his father, Louis, a Detroit firefighter and his mother, Ruth, an accomplished homemaker. He was drafted shortly after graduating from Detroit Denby High School into the Army and served in the Korean War, deploying to combat in Korea. After serving he completed a bachelors degree in civil engineering at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. He met Ruth, a recent immigrant from Munich Germany, and they married in 1958. They settled in Royal Oak, MI and John worked as Troy City Engineer, civil engineer for Shell Oil and then for many years at Holloway Construction Wixom where he worked such large-scale projects as the Pontiac Silverdome, Michigan International Speedway and the Dallas Fort Worth Airport. After another move to live in Franklin, MI for several years, John later retired from construction to manage a mobile home park in Holland, MI and work on his investments. John and Ruth enjoyed visiting their grandchildren Jessica and Matthew in Potomac Falls, VA. They visited many of the museums in Washington, D.C. and the local zoos. Having learned to fly for which he had a great passion, John taught his grandchildren to use his Microsoft Flight Simulator on their home computer. He and Ruth would also spend many hours taking care of grandson Daine in their home in Bingham Farms, MI while his mom worked on her college degree.
