Dr. Stern saved my life in the early 1980's when I was 19. I had cancer and had undergone surgery for it by another Dr., without anesthesia. That Dr. didn't get it all so I saw Dr. Stern. I asked to speak with him in office to explain my recent, traumatic experience with him prior to the examination. Not only did he listen, he validated what I went through, knocked me out good and successfully eradicated the cancer and I'm forever grateful. May he rest in peace.

Dear Stern FamilyI am a member of Powerhouse Gym-Novi. I just found out the news today. I was emotional walking to my car on the way home. It's been several hours, and I still can't shake the news. I hadn't seem him in a while, and asked someone at the front desk if they had seen him.Dr. Joe was in 7 days a week, and I was there 6 of those days. I was a pharmaceuticalbiotechnology sales rep for nearly 8 years. He was never a customer of mine, but once told him that he was the most humble, gracious, down-to-earth physician I ever met. Despite all of his success, he never forgot where he came from. I used to call him Dr. Cool. Despite being 83, he was young at heart! His continued commitment to fitness was an inspiration to many.I am a professional speaker and writer now, and one day at Powerhouse last October, Dr. Joe told me, Kiddo, keep doing what you're doing. Someday, you'll be speaking all over the world. I never forgot that, and will certainly be honoring him and his encouragement in a future speech on just how impactful kind words can be. He was truly a bright ray of sunshine for all at the gym. His presence, spirit, and sense of humor is greatly missed. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for so generously sharing Dr. Joe with all of us.

Ashley- I am Dr Stern's daughter and thank you for your kind words-- my Dad never lived in Maryland (we're from Detroit)- how comforting that there was another Joseph William Stern- but in some way maybe he is speaking -- 'The Living Body' sounds like a book my Dad would like.... thank you for trying to find the owner of the book. And thank you for your kind wishes for us-- this is a huge loss.

To Dr. Stern's Family and Friends, Although, I wasn't fortunate enough to know Dr. Stern, I recently purchased a lot of books from a church thrift store in Maryland and among them is one entitled, 'The Living Body'. Beneath the front cover reads Joseph William Stern - '53 along with an address in Bowie, Maryland. I'm not sure if Dr. Stern ever lived in Maryland, but if so and this book belonged to him...I would be happy to return it to it's rightful owners. If not, I wish you comfort and peace. I'm terribly sorry for your loss. With Love, Ashley (alynnhaynes@gmail.com)

Dr. Joe is definitely one of a kind-amazing to say the least. I knew him from the gym. Every time I saw him he had a smile on his face and was just about always helping someone with something. His jokes were sensational as was his expertise. He was doing pretty well with the Russian I was teaching him too. I miss him very much and he is in my prayers... To his family - my deepest sympathies.

WOW...what to say about Dr. Joe.....He won me at first sight of his smile so many years ago....the first time I saw him was finding that I was pregnant with my first child...I was scared to death, fact being I was a special case having had polio at a young age walking on crutches and braces...he won my trust right off with much assurance from him calming my fears...with him seeing the fear in me, he gave me special attention always talking very softly with that smile answering all my questions...he walked me graciously thru this overwhelming period of my life and delivered both of my beautiful healthy children...I fell in love with him then and I still hold him in high regard....I'm convinced the success of those pregnancies were directly due to him and the Lord....Praying for his wife Beth and his children, and all friends..........finding comfort in St. John 14

I first met Dr. Joe when I was a detail person with Ortho Pharmaceuticals. He took his time with me and gave me an education that I could never had gotten anywhere else. One day I walked in and he was playing with his new laser surgical device. This is the first of its kind this side of the Mississippi he claimed. He truly was tops in his field and when my wife needed surgery, he was to one we wanted. And he wasn't shy about expressing what a good job he did with the surgery either! He was well loved and will be missed by all.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Joe around 2009 when I went to work for Wal-Mart. What a truly gentle spirit, and compassionate human being, Dr Joe was. He was still living life on his terms, and his energy was contagious. We often talked in the break room, and I found myself wanting to do better, once that occurred. Thoughts and prayers to the family and know that he was loved.

Dr. Joe was an amazing man and my life is so much richer for having known him. He was many things to me...a friend, a mentor, a doctor, a confidant, a father like figure and an all around mench! Dr. Joe was very good to both myself and my family. He always had a willing smile, a zest for life and those around him, and an easiness that made it easy to love him. I will miss our chats both in the store weekly and on FB. Until we meet again and I can hear your greeting, Hey Kid, rest easy Dr. Joe...you are loved 3

I'm very sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Stern. He was my mentor and friend who gave me my start after leaving residency. He taught me so much about the practice of medicine that I still carry with me to this very day. He will always have a place in my heart and my mind. He was one of the best doctors that I have ever worked with. He was the original stork. To this day and for over 25 years, I still have his stork license plate on my vehicle as a tribute to Dr. Stern! Thank you Dr. Stern for all you have done for me.Dr. Mark Werner
