Obituary of Lyman Ophir Newell

Lyman O Newell, 84, passed quietly at home on Wed Dec 28, 2016, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his wife of 58 years, M. Frances (McCann) Newell, and his two daughters, Karla Newell of San Diego, CA, and Renee Baker of Belleville, MI. He is survived by his son, Mark Newell of Torrance, CA, and eight grandchildren; Aidan Newell, Margaux Newell, triplets Allie and Brendan Baker, and Sebastian Newell, Max Whittington, Keaton and Patrick Newell. Born in Cleveland, OH, he graduated from Lakewood High school in 1950 after which he attended Kent State University, and graduated from Ohio State University. He worked in medical research at Case WRU, and served 2 years in the US Army. After his marriage he moved to Detroit where he worked as a fire protection engineer. During his retirement years he worked for Meijers in Royal Oak, MI. He was an avid outdoorsman which began as a boy scout. He became an Eagle Scout in 1947 at the age of 14, the youngest scout ever to achieve this rank at that time. Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, March 11 , 2:00 pm at the Northwest Unitarian Universalist church , 23925 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI, where he was an active member for many years. He will be missed but held long and lovingly in memory by his keen sense of humor and entertaining story telling. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to Northwest Unitarian Universalist
