Dear Diana,Marty and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Rick's sudden death. We had the distinct pleasure of enjoying Rick's company at the reunion of his HNCL hockey buddies onSeptember 13th. We were very sorry that you were unable to attend. I do believe that the attendees feel blessed that we all had the opportunity of so recently sharing conversations and laughter with Rapid Rick. He was a true gentleman who possessed a quiet dignity that so many people admired. Please know that we honor your sorrow. Our hearts go out to you and your family.SincerelyMimi and Marty McEvoy

Words are hard to come by right now. I have known Rick since 1969, when we were the only two male students in a large education class at MSU. Over the years we have many humorous and serious discussions. He truly was a unique individual, a good and genuine person. Diana, you and your family, are in my prayers. Love, Rick Willis

Hello Diana and family, I just learned of the news today and am so very sorry. Even though we've only known you for the past two years, Rick will always be in our memories. He was the very first neighbor Sammy and I met and I know just this last weekend you were both trying to cheer Sammy up while he was missing me and his sister. Please know that we are there for you. Sending our love.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rick ten years ago when I was indoctrinated into the stag ski brotherhood. I quickly realized that not only was Rick passionate about skiing, he was passionate about LIFE. His thoughtful conversations resonated with all of those around him, and I was immediately struck by how genuine this man was. Rick was of a rare breed...someone that truly cared about those around him, had the uncanny ability to make everyone around him feel comfortable, and brighten every room he set foot in. He will be greatly missed.

Rick lived not just a full life...but a life in Full. My recollections are many yet pale to what Family and lifelong friends can recollect. I met Rick in 1973 while he was teaching Special Ed. at Hutchinson Elementary. Since then, I've witnessed his social consciousness, community involvement, and his advocacy for education. The pride and passion he had for his wife, daughters, foster children and grandchildren was clearly evident in all that he did. And ... , he did plenty!I participated in SOME of the myriad of activities that he so enthusiastically enjoyed. Hockey (from whence came RAPID), softball ,downhill skiing (claimed his favorite), cross country skiing ( told me 38 times last winter), sailing, snow shoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, cards and golf. The interest were even more vast. His interests and experiences were endless WHITE WATER RAFTING... sure... SKY DIVE....check...LUGE RUN....why not.....MACKINAW RACE.....many....TOURING THROUGHOUT the UNITED STATES....name a state he hadn't visited...LIVING AND WORKING IN ALASKA...canneries anyone.......WORLDWIDE TRAVEL.....all the time...BREW BEER.....WORLD SERIES....MAKE WINE...YOGA...MICHIGAN STATE GAMES..........COTTAGE on HURON...PLAYS...ART SHOWS...Just check yes to all of these and SO many that I'm forgetting. Rick didn't have a bucket, not even a tub, he had a ship container LIST! ALL of this while being the GREAT COMMUNICATOR of the eastside (doubt Rick would like the RR reference) . He loved to converse and more importantly loved to listen.A phone call to confirm a card game would turn into an hour on a variety of topics. A four hour ride north went unnoticed as interesting or humorous dialogue passed the time.People who met him for the first time always commented on the pleasure of their conversation. To say I will miss him doesn't seem enough. Future times without him will be less exciting, less fun, less FULL. Let his life be a constant reminder to all of us to pursue the experience, anticipate the event, enjoy the time and savor the memory. Live like Rick! Live life to the FULLEST.

I had the honor and privilege of Ricks friendship through the game of golf. I will miss the thoughtful conversations we had as roommates on our golf excursions. I admired Ricks diplomacy skills while soliciting everyone's money for the golf gambling games. Rick had a special way of making you feel good about giving him your money. I will miss his calm respectful demeanor. Rick believed in grace for all. Most certainly the Rapid Rule will be invoked in honor of Ricks insistence that a mulligan is deserved for every golfers first drive of the day. Rick had the gift of thoughtful communication. I will miss the casual walks and talks down the fairway and his kind and gentle spirit. Heartfelt sympathies to Diana and all of the family.Gods peace my Sparty friend, you are missed.Allen
