Hyman Yee posted a condolence

Although we never met I often wondered about Dr. Hyman Yee... specifically why did his Chinese parents name him Hyman Was it some transliteration of his Chinese name Was it suggested by a family friend or acquaintance Maybe you have to be a New Yorker or a Mel BrookBuck Henry fan to remember this Let's name him Hymie. My uncle's name is Hymie. Sorry we never met or had the opportunity to speak with each other prior to his passing. My parents were both from China... and also named me Hyman. So that in itself is odd and different. But Dr. Yee and I also shared the same surname! I believe my given name was suggested by our family's lawyer... and it is a transliteration of my Chinese name (Toi-Shan dialect). Rest in peace, dear name-twin.

Hello Everyone. Seiko Yee here (former wife of Henry Yee, Hyman's oldest brother who passed away in 1993). I wanted to share a favorite more recent memory - a simple memory which brings me joy to think about. This past December, Marcy picked up Hyman from the assisted living facility where he stayed, and thoughtfully brought him over for a visit to my house. The three of us spent the afternoon together, talking and having some tea and daifuku (a Japanese sweet). I hadn't seen him in awhile and it was delightful to see him. He will be missed by many.

Uncle Hyman. I met you when I was a kid, probably around 10 years old or so. I was having some eczema and it was bothering me a fair amount. I remember first meeting you and Rose - both of you so kind, so warm, so welcoming at your office. You looked like my dad (Henry) and that was pretty amazing to see the resemblance. Most recently, I got to spend some time with you a couple of years ago at a big birthday celebration for my mom (Seiko) over the December holidays, and another time - you, Marcy and I went out for dim sum at Shangri-la. We had har gao, lo mai gai, and char siu bao. I am so glad we got some more time to sit, and chat, and just be - together. Thank you Marcy for helping make that visit possible. Uncle Hyman - What I will remember most about you is your gentleness, your warmth and your kindness. What a gift to know and love you.

We wanted to share a couple of memories of Uncle Hyman from the days of the laundry. When our parents (Jack and Shui Kuen Yee) came to Gold Mountain none of us knew Uncle Hyman, since we had stayed in China and Hong Kong while he was born and raised in Detroit. Charlotte remembers the family dinners when Hyman and Rose would come to the restaurant for my mother's cooking. She would make favorites like gai loong or the green sticky rice dumplings for them to take home. I remember one Christmas he bought presents for all of us children because when he was growing up, he didn't get Christmas presents, and he wanted us to have more than he had growing up. He leaves behind many memories of his kindness.

Uncle Hyman, we will miss you dearly. I appreciated the time you always took to share your expertise with us for our daughter Mia's eczema skin condition even though you were already retired at the time. When Mia was younger, her condition was so severe that she was hospitalized three times for treatments. Your kindness and caring will live on in our hearts. Rest in peace dear uncle.

thank you Marcy for letting me know about Hyman passing. We were friends for over 56 years. We first met when we worked together at National Bank of Detroit in the International Department in 1963. We became friends with Hyman and Rose and exchanged Christmas cards all those years. Hyman and Rose were such a wonderful couple. Rest in peace my dear friend. Gary Evans.

So sad to hear of Hy's passing. It was a pleasure to know Hy and Rose and serve them when they purchased gasoline at Crooks Road and Auburn. We enjoyed many conversations over the years. We kept in touch after we moved to California exchanging Christmas cards and letters until the last few years. My wife and I visited with Hy and Rose on one of our vacations to Michigan and we went out to dinner together. On that occasion Hy let me drive his Mercedes. We will fondly remember Hy and Rose as wonderfully friendly people and feel blessed to have known them.

I remember asking my Dad, Herbert, about his childhood and some of his favorite memories. He said he would take Hyman out with him on his paper route and after they were finished, they would go to a local deli and share a corned beef sandwich. Some years later, while in a hospital cafeteria with Uncle Hyman, I asked Hyman if he remembered the story my Dad shared. He said he didn't remember the sandwich. He simply remembers his brother caring to take him around because Hyman was too young to be much help anyways and that was better than any sandwich. Thank you for the lesson Uncle Hyman. You are loved.

Hy had a great sense of humor. He referred to himself as Hollowman because of the body parts he lost through various surgeries. He loved good Chinese food and desserts, especially Lebanese pastries. He loved the practice of medicine and attended dermatology conferences every year. Most of all he loved Rose and the life they shared. Hy will be missed by his friends and relatives.
