Edith was my cataloging teacher in 1972 and, after that, we stayed in touch. I worked for her husband, Clarence, in my first library job; I met her at Wayne State Alumni events; and I ran into her at social events. In spite of the challenges of her life, she remained upbeat and positive, for which I admired her more than I can ever say. It is the end of an era in many of our lives, but we will never forget her. Never.

Edith was a true professional in her work. She was a gifted teacher who inspired me with her standards for librarianship and the freedom to read. We had much in common membership in the League of Women Voters and the ACLU, and our interest in the Hilberry theater. With some of my fellow students we kept in touch over the years with Edith at get-togethers. I admire her devotion to her local library, her interest in good government and libraries as places where all ideas can be explored.

Edith was a dear friend and colleague of mine. She was my major professor at WSU, and we enjoyed lunch together for many years. We shared many common interests compassion for others, freedom to read and think, poetry and theatre, classical music, environmental concerns, birdwatching and working with language. I shall always miss her. Things that she said accompany me.
