Obituary of Louis R. Van Cuyl
Louis R. Van Cuyl, 94 years old, died on September 4 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Melba of 67 years, his daughter Dali Giese (a.k.a. Pam Van Cuyl) and her husband Howard, his son Mark Van Cuyl and wife Bethany, and two grandsons Drake and Cole Spalding. He is predeceased by his son Jeff Van Cuyl and his daughter Penni Van Cuyl and his brother Camille Van Cuyl.
Lou is a Navy veteran of World War II serving his country for four years in both the European and Pacific theaters. Over the years, Lou's patriotism and strong interest in veteran affairs lead him to spearhead Howell's Veteran Memorial enhancement project which was dedicated in September, 2013. Louis moved his family from Detroit to Howell in July, 1969. He loved his 20-acre country plot located at 3100 Byron Road. In 1984, he retired his 43-year career from Michigan Bell and began his community service. He was a member of the Howell Beautification Committee and the Farmers Club, to name a few. Not to mention countless other community projects and events.
Louis was an excellent chef, expressing his love of neighbors and friends through his cooking. If you've ever had a taste of his "flaming strawberries" you are considered part of his circle of friends. Or, you may have had the pleasure of something from his barbeque trailer or a Holiday meal. Louis was an avid swimmer hitting the Howell High School pool two three days a week, which contributed to his high quality of life during his last few years. He was a well-known fixture in town where he visited many friends telling stories and passing out advice. His slow moving Ford Contour will be missed on Byron Road and Grand River!
The family invites you to a service at the Howell Veteran's Memorial located at 200 East Grand River downtown Howell in front of old court house, on September 14 at 1:00 pm, with a memorial service and luncheon to follow at Chemung Hills Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Howell Area Chamber Of Commerce Foundation.
