Mary Ellen and I met on the first day of orientation for our freshman year at University of Michigan. There were about 20 of us women for whom there was not room in the women's dormitories! Finally one of the dorms in West Quad. a men's dormitory, was vacated and we were among the only women who moved in there. We had to eat in the same dining hall as the men, and socialized freely with them (a ratio of 9 men to one gal) M.E. and I became good friends that year and went on to join the same sorority, Sigma Kappa. We both dated men in the ATO fraternity, and double dated often. We stayed in close touch for the next years of our lives, full of marriages (and divorces!) and child raising. We shared friends in Grosse Pointe, and saw each other at many reunions for the sorority. The last time I saw her was when she hosted 8 of us a few years ago at her Pebble Beach home. She was a warm, gracious, generous hostess and the reunion was memorable, with much reminiscing and hilarity. I am truly saddened by losing her. Such fond memories' My condolences to her family, of whom she was very proud.
