Obituary of Mary Ellen Hutchison

Mary Ellen Hutchison, 85

October 19, 1935 – August 20, 2021

Mary Ellen Hutchison of Pebble Beach, CA, formerly of Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, passed away suddenly on August 20, 2021, during a visit to Michigan.

Mary Ellen grew up in Detroit, Michigan. After Denby HS, she received a BS in Dental Hygiene from University of Michigan and worked in that field for over 20 years. She began a new career at General Motors in the global planning department. After her children graduated college, she married her longtime beau, Robert C. (Hutch) Hutchison. After retiring from General Motors they moved to California.

Mary Ellen “M.E.” was well known for her athleticism and competitive spirit.  She enjoyed playing basketball, tennis and pool, among other sports. While at the University of Michigan, she took first place in a fencing competition.  She played tennis in Grosse Pointe and at the Indian Village Tennis Club. Eventually, golf became her passion and she and Hutch had memberships at the Detroit Golf Club, on Skidaway Island, and at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Their love of golf led them to play golf in all 50 states.

She was very involved at MPCC, playing golf, mahjong and cards. She was a skilled bridge player and loved painting & crafting with her art class friends. In her more passionate pursuits, Mary Ellen was quick to volunteer for leadership roles.

M.E. spent a fun month in Michigan, visiting with friends and many family members. She was thrilled with future plans to live at an independent retirement community in Livonia MI by summer, 2022. She dreamed of playing bridge morning, noon, & night, enjoying meals prepared by others, and reconnecting with more Michigan friends and relatives.

She will be missed by her family and friends and her U-M Sigma Kappa sorority sisters.

Mary Ellen is survived by her daughter Cheryl (Bob) Murphy, and son David (Megan) Boyle, four step-children and six grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, and husband.

One of her favorite charities was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital should you desire to make a contribution in her name.
