Obituary of Edward Mia
In Loving Memory Of
Edward Mia
November 29, 1932 - July 22, 2022
Edward Mia was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 29, 1932 to his late immigrant parents Aslam Mia of Bangladesh, India and Eunice (Lucas) Mia of St. Vincent, Kingston. After his mother’s death, he was raised by his late step-mother, Lillie Mia. He departed this life surrounded by his loving family on July 22, 2022 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Edward was the youngest of five siblings, 3 sisters (Louise “Betty” Sterling, Helen Curry and Miriam Williams) and one brother (Randolph Lucas), who all preceded him in death.
Edward received his public education in Brooklyn, New York. He enlisted in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged after being injured in the line of service. After being discharged, Edward began working for the United States Post Office while attending Pace College studying Accounting. In 1961, he decided to move to Detroit, MI to pursue the automotive industry.
Edward married Bernice Patricia Leake December 27, 1959 in Brooklyn, New York and their first son, Darryl Cheroud, was born in July of 1960. After moving to Detroit, MI and securing a job with J.L. Hudson’s, Edward and Bernice would have two additional children, Anthony (1963) and Gwendolyn Mercedes (1968). In 1969, Edward permanently made Highland Park, Michigan his home with his young family. He became an active member of the community and coached the Richton Raiders baseball team for several years. He also served as the local troop leader with the Boys Scouts of America building the foundation of many young men in the surrounding community. One of his fondest memories was becoming a founding member of the Highland Park Booster Club who supported the school’s athletic teams. He truly believed in helping youth by encouraging hard work, being loyal and most importantly having integrity. He continued working with the Lutheran High School West Booster Club until his last child (Gwen) graduated from high school. Edward retired from Hudson’s in 1987 after 25 years of service. He instilled values that encouraged all of his children to attend and graduate with degrees from college. Later in life, he was very proud to become the grandfather of five grandchildren, Trevor Anthony Mia, Lauren Nicole Mia, Khalid Rashard Hill, Khalil Cheroud Hill and Sandra Auden “Sammy” Mia who he dearly loved.
Edward was well loved and respected by his family, friends and anyone he met. He was an avid reader of all books, and would engage in stimulating conversations about politics and the world. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 63 years, Bernice Patricia Mia; children, Darryl Mia of Phoenix, AZ, Anthony (Susan) Mia of Norfolk, VA, and Gwendolyn Mia of Madison Heights, MI; grandchildren: Trevor Mia, Lauren Mia, Khalid Hill, Khalil Hill and Sammy Mia; nieces, Eunice Reid, Zainab Prowell, Florence Sterling, Rosetta Sterling, Janice Taylor, Ellen Brown and nephews, Ronald Scott, Eddie Scott, Frank Sterling, Joseph Sterling, William Sterling, Henry Sterling, James Sterling, Michael Scott, Lawrence Sterling, and Jonathan Scott; great-nieces and great-nephews, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
